  1. I tried connecting directly, and that didn't work.

some other people seem to be having the same problem

This may be on the boarder line of off topic. For about the last week about

half of the web sites that I go to work normally and the other half have

about a half minute delay before a page starts to load. The slow ones are

always slow and the fast ones are always fast. Up until a week ago EVERYTHING

was really fast. I am on a high speed DSL connection.

Here is where it all gets strange. Everything is still fast when using

windoze. And strainger yet it is not just me the same thing is happening to

at least 10 other Mandrake users in my area. All of us are using ML 10.0, ML

10.0.2 or ML 10.1 amd all of us still have normal fast service when using

windoze. I don't know if other linux distros are affected.

Is anyone else here having similar problems with Century Tel?

Anyone here have any idea what may be going on or the cause of this problem?

A few of us have contacted the local ISP, Century Tel and they have no

    answers.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or solutions

    Marc

  2. RP114 and its fully up to date.

if it was my router it would effect my win box as well.

A week ago this box was win 2k pro, everything worked fine with my net. I switched to mandrake and certain sites I visit regularly are creepingly slow, for no reason.

I thought it may be firefox was having problems with the software they are running (why, I dont know. when it just worked fine in 2000.) but after visiting several sites running the same scripts, etc, I realized that wasn't it.

So for some reason, random sites that I regularly visit are creeping slow. It's not my connection its running fine, its not their connection, its not some weird out of place code lagging the page, I dont know what it is.

  3. Ya got me...but that's easy to do.

These are all long shots, but you might check:

    1. Are you sure it's not actually the webpage *address* you go to, but how large the webpages are - IOW, maybe it really is slow all the time, but only noticeable on large pages.  A reach I know, but...

    2. Release your DHCP and grab a fresh lease.

    3. Security settings, setup of anything like firewalls or Portsentry you have installed and running - something might be getting in the way?

    4. CPU usage while loading a slow page.  A bug?

    5. Ping a slow page address from the Linux box - OS shouldn't matter, TCIP is TCIP, but ya never know, might give a hint.

    5. Pretend it's a Winshaft box and reboot.  When that fails to fix it, call tech support, get charged major $$$ and be told to reinstall the OS.

    1) its not

    2) no dice

    3) nothing, I just moved from win about a week ago and dont really have much setup

    4) normal usage

    5) pings fine

    6) I did actually try rebooting the other day but nothing, haha.

  4. I should have been more specific

    1) It's slow with any browser, but slowER with fox.. still grueling slow.

    2) only sites, and random sites..

    3) no problems on my win box

    4) yes

It's just when browsing certain sites, on my linux box. I thought it might be the sites were running something that was taking fox some time to work out (even though, these are regular sites I visit and have no problems) but.. my own site and this one are fine when loading (invision 2.0) despite one of the sites are running 2.0 and it is dragging slow.

    example;

    imdb.com loads slow

    freshmeat.net loads slow

and some other random sites.. doesn't make any sense.

  5. Seems like certain sites I goto load VERY slow, like im on 28.8 dialup. :( It's not the sites, and they load fine on my win box.. both running fox 1.0.

Not really sure why this is happening, I did the tweaks in the tips and tricks forum and didn't notice a difference. So.. I reinstalled FireFox, this time straight from moz and not using cooker. Same problem..

This also happens in regular Mozilla that came installed with mandrake (I'm running 10.1).

    any help appreciated.. :thanks:

  6. I cant remember what exactly I disabled. what motherboard/bios do you have? my asus (pheonix bios?) doesnt really let you "disable" PnP, but I could disable everything related. I have a whole section in the bios for just PnP. Then also Hardware.

I turned off some serial ports I wasnt using, firewire, etc.. that sped up my boot process. It was trying to probe those things at boot for minutes. I think that may have been some of the problem.

  7. not quite sure where to post this!

Im having a problem, I just installed mandrake 9.2 a couple hours ago, ive never used linux as a desktop before, but i am experienced with linux.

anyway, my problem is that, after I install packages from the mandrake package installer.. a whole bunch of thigns just disappear from my menu??? (whole folders, single apps, etc..)

I have to open drakemenu and refresh it, then save. that fixs the problem.. but im pretty sure thats not supposed to happen :P

    any help is appreciated

    thanks,

    Drew
