  1. "And unless you have a MB older than 4 years you should have sometype of plug and play option in the bios." ...this comp is 4 years old...like...98...99 :-P

my other is just over a year old though...and it doesn't have it either :-S

as for what kind of install I'm trying...can't do harddrive, because it's not big enough for all the files...tried CD...same prob...tried hard drive on my other comp...same prob...as with cd...the only thing I was able to do was a network install from the DL FTP sites...

  2. I had that problem a little while ago, but haven't had it much lately...what browser you using? I've NEVER had that on mozilla...only times I've seen it are on IE...

as for other email services, I know excite has one....not sure how good it is...yahoo has one too...it's decent...

  3. first off, I don't have the CD-Roms...I'm using the DL version...all USB things are unplugged, an no, it doesn't say '[yourusername@localhost yourusername]$'...it says something like 'SYSLINK version _____' then 'Mandrake linux' 'copyright _______'...something somewhat similar to that...and I don't have a plug and play OS thing on my BIOS...it's not on the BIOS of my other comp either...it worked fine on there...

I'm gonna TRY installing it on the other comp, just on a single drive, then I'll switch when I need to, if I can't get it the other way

  4. oops...it'd probably help to know my system specs:

    Compaq Presario 5000

I'm just gonna post exactly what's on the side:

    -Intel Celeron Processor 667 MHz

    - 64MB total system memory

    - up to 11MB allocated as video memory

    - 15GB hard drive [my linux one is 30]

That should be all there that you need...it's windows 98 SE, and I've tried re-installing the MBR...

  5. Aight, here's where i'm at now...i fixed that comp, but, as i had from the start, i want linux on this one...I have the harddrive in this comp (in the floppy drive :-P sticking out both ends...I don't have what I need to install it correctly...and never plan on getting it) and it's hooked up on the master end of the cable (couldn't get it the other way)...and linux should still be installed, with a boot sector on that disc, but when I boot up, windows just comes up, and when I put in the floppy, it says whatever in dos (something about linux and the copyright...w/e it says right before the install screen), but it freezes there, which is why I installed on the other comp in the first place...Anyways, anyone know what could cause this?

  6. It's a FTP install from the mandrake download servers...when I downloaded it, I couldn't get it installed...so I did that...it worked before, but doesn't now :-S

would a MBR on both harddrives cause this? I accidentally put it on the main during the first install, but wasn't sure in the second, so I put it on the second harddrive...

  7. Aight, I thought something like that had happened...during install it said something about the Swap partition...I figured it probably had something to do with that.

If I tried to reinstall, and put the MBR somewhere else, would that cause problems? Because I did, and linux won't load (I posted this somewhere else already, so if this isn't the cause, then look for that if you wanna know anything else about it)

    I don't have a DOS boot floppy...and I tried reinstalling linux, but it still doesn't work :-S

I think I found it on the windows XP cd...but right as I was gonna try...my brother needed back on the comp...guess I'll have to try later...

  8. I had it installed, and it was working...kinda...but it had some problems, so I tried to reinstall it, and I got an error...tried again, same thing. Anyways, the error/problem is that when I try to boot into 'Linux', nothing happens. 'Linux-secure' just shows '.......' in a dos screen, and the other 2 say 'EBDA is big; kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage.' anyone know how to fix that???:help:

  9. I recently got a new hard drive specifically for linux, but I couldn't install it on the computer I had planned to, because when I put in the boot disc, it didn't work, though I have all the requirements. Anyways, I put the hard drive in my other comp as a secondary harddrive, and installed linux, making sure the entire partition was on that drive. However, when I remove it, Windows won't boot, and if I put it on the other comp, it says there is no OS installed! :-S anyone know what happened or how to fix it, short of reinstalling both OSs

  10. Aight...I think it's really really buggy...which would explain why KDE and such all seemed insanely messed up...under the K menu, all I have is 'lock screen' and 'logout'...there is not 'configuration'...and I've been having other problems as well...I'll try reinstalling it

AURGH! I can't get it installed again! last time it took me a day...ended up booting it from the ftp site...which isn't working! and the rest of the image files didn't work...GAH!

    [edit 2]

ok, it turns out the server was down...this other one's hella slow, but hey, it works...

  11. this is probably posted somewhere else, but I can't find it ATM...anyways, after spending about an hour or 2 messing with it (first day of Linux) I finally got wine installed...and am wonder what the point of it is? text files can be opened by Linux anyways, and I've trid 4 or 5 exes, none of which worked...so what exactly are windows emulators for?

  12. It does have the group under /home, and it KINDA works...but not really...first, when i enter userdrake, it only shows 6 *s under password for some reason...and when I type in the first 6 (or more) letters of the password, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then returns to the login screen...but it doensn't say incorrect password or anything :-S

  13. Aight, I was expecting that I'd be the only one in my family using Linux when I installed it...the rest of my family thought I was stupid for getting it...but now, 1 day after installing (yea, I'm a major newbie :-P) he decided he wants to use it now...and I can't figure out how to add a user! I found a program called userdrake under /usr/bin/ , and that looked to be it, and it did create the user, but you can't log in :-S anyone know what I need to do??

BTW - please explain it as simple as possible...yea, I'm a geek...I know some C++, etc...but I'm only 13, and this is my first day on linux :-P
