    XFree86 is not dead. Just any release after version 4.3.0 is GPL troubled.

     

     

    Thats one bad thing about Debian proper (and Mepis). They are stuck on 4.3 when the current version is 4.5. No upgrades or bug fixes because of the new license.

     

    Sooner all Distro move to xorg the better.

    I used to knock Linspire in the past. No more. Why?

     

    I had a buddy his mom asked me how do get rid of those viri and malware. Joking I told her "use Linux"

     

    After about a half hour explaining what Linux was she wanted to try it. Frankly I did not have the time to setup a Distro for her. I told her go to www.linspire.com.

     

    A couple of weeks later she is using some Lphoto program for her pictures. She loved all the "howTo's" and said getting a hold of Linsipre on the phone was not difficult.

     

    I was shocked. Yea I didnt like the user as root part so I talked to her about that but her was a grandma that bought a Distro (linspire) and installed / run with no help. When a Distro can take a total computer noice and make them into a Linux user they have my vote.

    Every "Distro" that is based of Debian at times does not play well with the Debian main Repos.

     

     

    (ahem - cough - cough Ubuntu)

     

    This gives a a "pure Debian" system installed with the DVD - Flash goodness.

     

    Plus you could always change your sources to sid and "apt-get dist-upgrade"

     

    Then it would be a Debian pure (Sid) :cheesy:

    To be honest - Newbies like nice graphical system tools.

     

    Ubuntu dont got it.

     

    If they dont want "pay per service" like Linspire

     

     

    then Id say Mandrake or Suse are your best choise.

     

    Personal experience:

    Ive installed both Suse and Mandrake on ex Windows users computers, Those who I installed Mandrake on once they saw Suse wanted me to install it on their system. They seemed to like the menu setup of Suse rather then Mandrake.

     

    If I had to install a Distro on my wife's or Grandma's computer - It would be Linspire or Xandros.

     

    --probably Linspire with a lifetime CNR membership. All those flash howto's linspire comes with are very helpful.

    More and more Linux Distro have their own "Livecd"

     

    What I find interesting is that more and more are Hard Drive installable Livecd's.

     

    I for one think its a good idea - IT boots up and you check if it works for your system. If its all good click.click its installed on your hard drive.

     

    Mepis is a good example here. It worked well with my Laptop and install flawless. I think its the future of most Distro's

     

    What say you?

    Thats not saying you could not just save your /home and reinstall. You see I have Soooo many custom hacks on my box - you know just tinkering around stuff that it just doesnt look appealing to me to have to redo it all for the next cycle.

    I would agree to any .deb or a Distro like Gentoo. Most .rmp based distros prefer you do a complete new install on each upgrade.

     

    I have not had very good luck upgrading a system that was .rpm. Thats why I left MDK. Thats why IMHO .rpm Distros are the best for retail sale. You need to buy the next version when it comes out.

     

    Its possible to upgrade from SuSE9.2 to Suse9.3 via the YAST sources but it is not advisable. At least IMHO. Its about choice right? I never had any luck with a full Distro upgrade from one release to the next on any .rpm Distro. Doesnt mean it cant be done but Ive had NO problems with a full system upgrade to the next release with my Gentoo system.

     

    Just one of the reasons I choose Gentoo. :cheesy:

    Not me, anyway.

    The source based distro philosophy is simply flawed, and I wouldn't care less about a graphical installer (ncurses is OK, but anything more than that plain eyecandy with no real functionality.

     

    Remember Gentoo also has binary packages from those who want them. I always use them for the large installs like OpenOffice.

     

    I like Gentoo because of Portage and its community. Its no fluff install - No extras unless you want it. Ive learned more tweaking my Gentoo box than I have with any other Distro. I like the fact of one install and your done FOREVER. That is so long as you maintain your system. :P
