  1. Ahh Ta John, I assumed if it could play CDs it could also play DVDs. Told you I was new at this stuff. Thank you all for your patience. No flies on the Penguin. Colin
  2. Thanks Adam. I only have the one DVD. So it appears that my brand new E-IDE CD-RW drive, which came with my brand new branded computer is not capable of using DVDs. That seems odd, I'll try to check with the manufacturer, see what they say, and post back here. Thank you all for your help and encouragement. Colin

  4. Both this: mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc and this: mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdd When typed into Konsole cause the cursor to leap ahead leaving a chunk of instructions on keying options, which cannot be copied and pasted. I think it doesn't like either command. Perhaps we better leave it, we don't seem to be making any progress. Thanks for your patience and help. Colin

I take it you don't think the plugin error message on the Kaffeine interface is significant?
  6. Forgive me, but how do I discover the 'number of the dvd' needed to complete your command?
  7. Thank you. I did what you suggested (I've still got plf disabled) and I installed mplayer thus: [colin@localhost colin]$ su Password: [root@localhost colin]# urpmi mplayer To satisfy dependencies, the following 11 packages are going to be installed (13 MB): fribidi-0.10.4-4mdk.i586 libdha1.0-1.0-0.pre5.7.101mdk.i586 libenca0-1.5-2mdk.i586 libfribidi0-0.10.4-4mdk.i586 libggi-2.0.5-1mdk.i586 libggi2-2.0.5-1mdk.i586 libgii-0.8.5-2mdk.i586 libgii0-0.8.5-2mdk.i586 liblirc0-0.6.6-7mdk.i586 libpostproc0-1.0-0.pre5.7.101mdk.i586 mplayer-1.0-0.pre5.7.101mdk.i586 Is this OK? Bottom left of the Kaffeine black screen, there's a text line. 'Error: No plugin found to handle this resource' This is in addition to the centrally displayed error message which comes up when I click Play> dvd The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (/dev/dvd) Thank you for your help....
  8. Thanks Devries; Here's what happened, [root@localhost colin]# urpmi mplayer Some package requested cannot be installed: mplayer-1.0-0.pre6.7plf.i586 (due to unsatisfied real-codecs) Continue? (Y/n) n [root@localhost colin]# I chose 'n' so as not to cause problems. If I install mplayer using the MCC which is the best package to choose from the list? According to my MCC listing, NONE of the dozen or so mplayer options shown is 'currently installed'. I appreciate your help, I'm brand new to all this. Colin
  9. A thought... Kaffeine plays CDs no problem, but I noticed a line of text appearing on the bottom left of the black opening screen... (This is before you select what medium to Play) Error: Pluggin not found for this resource. Would it help to re-install Kaffeine from my CDs? My current installed version (From the Mdk. 10.1 OE cd is Kaffeine 0.43b-7mdk)
  10. I've just tried this command again, (after trying those subsequent ones), and this is the result: [root@localhost colin]# ll /dev/dvd lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Mar 31 10:11 /dev/dvd -> /dev/cdrom [root@localhost colin]# I'm not sure what that signifies, but Kaffeine still gives this error mssg: The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (/dev/dvd) Thanks for your continued help...
  11. Thank you Adam and AR, I appreciate your help getting the DVD to function. I tried both suggestions, here's the result: [root@localhost colin]# ls /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom@ [root@localhost colin]# ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd [root@localhost colin]# Then I opened Kaffeine, put the DVD in, and clicked Play: DVD and got the same error message as before: The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (/dev/dvd) I'm not aware of having changed any of the default settings after instaling Mdk, and everything else has worked fine from a standing start, so why I'm unable to play DVDs, I have no idea.
  12. Ahh! Bluefish is more like it. (NVU is like Quanta and Screem, too heavy) I found and tested Bluefish 0.13 on the Mdk 10.1 OE CD, but the latest version is Bluefish 1.0 Anybody know how I can get the latest Bluefish Mdk 10.1 rpms so I can use urpmi to install. I'm not sure how to use the update media componant safely.
  13. Thanks Yves, I installed nedit, and had a look. It doesn't allow you to open multiple files, (you have to open one at a time) and search and replace through them all, in one search. Just one at a time. I'd need to open about 50-100 files a time and replace a given phrase. Thanks for your advice though. Colin
  14. Thank you both... I found, downloaded and installed libdvdcss using urpmi, I saw no error messages, and got the final 'Installed successfully' message, so I assume it's OK. I also installed libdvdread too just in case that was essential, but the DVD still gives the same error message. Here's the result of both of your suggestions: [root@localhost colin]# mplayer dvd:// bash: mplayer: command not found [root@localhost colin]# [root@localhost colin]# ll /dev/dvd ls: /dev/dvd: No such file or directory [root@localhost colin]# The DVD clearly states that it is code free, was bought new from Germany, and is meant for worldwide viewing. It's a Christian evangelism DVD, (Reinhard Bonnke, CfaN) so there wouldn't be any reason to restrict viewing to a region. It runs on UK DVD players no problem.
  15. Thanks Devries. I don't want to seem ungrateful to the developers, but I've tried Quanta and Screem etc, the default HTML editors in Mdk 10.1, and they are far too 'bulky', complicated, and unstable. I'm looking for the equivalent of the old Arachnophilia. (Not the java one). It's clean, lite, and bullet-proof. It whizzes through multiple find and replace commands, and has never made a mistake while I've been using it. These WYSIWYG editors and Quanta etc just don't get there like Arachie. I don't have confidence that they find and replace reliably. And it is essential I trust them. NVU I've not found yet, is it included in the 10.1 OE CDs? How about 'August', that looks more like it, but I couldn't get it to install and run. Anybody know what I'm after? It seems ridiculous that I have to keep switching to a Windows computer to do cross site updates reliably. ta!
  16. Just switched to Mdk, and searched in vein for a decent simple HTML editor that does what the old Arachnophilia does. ie. Solidly and reliably find and replace a given phrase through multiple open docs. The Linux WYSIWYG editors are awful in this respect. The nearest to Arachie I've found is 'Kate', but it only processes a single open document at at time, instead of an open batch. Almost everyday I have to replace a phrase across say, 150 files, and the old Archnophilia does it superbly in seconds. (Yes, I tried Paul Lutus' new Java based Arachnophilia, and with respect, it's tragic. Consumes all my RAM just at idle, and he's dropped the Find and Replace feature from the defaults. To get it you have to make your own complicated macro. And fiddle with regex.) So, to update my website, I have to switch back to my old Windows machine, daily, and use Arachie. Anybody have the perfect Linux HTML Editor for efficient find and replace, beside those Geeky eMacs types? Ta! [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  17. Mandrake 10.1 OE in a new desktop from CDs md5sum checked OK. Clean fresh installation, sole OS. Thrilled with Linux. All programmes working smoothly except I can't play my only DVD. I've tried viewing it using Kaffeine, which plays CDs fine, but when I put in the DVD (which is a new and legitimate DVD PAL code free edition) I get this error message: "The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (/dev/dvd)" There is a disk in the drive, and I'm certain there's no problem with the dvd, it's already been viewed on a dvd player OK. Using urmpi, I downloaded the latest plf and installed libdvdcss and libdvdread succesfully, but I still get the same error message. The setup and setting are pretty much the 'default' ones with Mdk 10.1. This is my first time using Linux. Anybody help? Ta!
