DynaBook V1/470PMC |
8.0, 8.1b |
This Laptop has only minimal support in Linux. As the VGA
card is a Trident Cyberblade XP (no support in Linux), I use Framebuffer mode - 16bit in 1024x768. Sound card based on AC97 chipset but, due to the Advance Bios system of this Laptop, sound card and modem do not respond. It's PCMCIA card bus is ToPIC100, which now works with 2.4.7 kernel. I use a USB Corega NIC card, it works fine. It also supports USB mice. But USB mouse and TouchPad won't work simultanously. It can't detect the battery and any Bios related information. In Beta3, I had a problem with the frame buffer X, it couldn't get the font path. Otherwise, it is ok for me. |

When installing Mandrake on this laptop with no battery;
rather using an A/C adapter for power, the laptop usually fails to install fully. I found that the laptop was drawing too much power from the laptop to install because of the hard drive and CD-Rom being accessed simultaneously. To resolve the problem goto the BIOS by holding the ESC key during boot, and then press F1. The key feature which draws power the most, next to the hard drive and CD-Rom, is the LCD. Turn the brightness of the screen down and the install should be done successfully in the next try. |

I give it a 4 (perfectly working) even though I have not
been able to get the modem working because I don't use the modem at all,
just a Linksys PCMCIA network card. Otherwise, everything works great with

The XDrake X config didn't work very well. The problem

1. Winmodem - there are drivers for this winmodem
- ltmodem. Could you include it in distro, instead if writing 'visit www.winmodem.org'
[No, we can't. tom] 2. IrDA is working after reconfiguring a bit - I've tried to setup a connection with Nokia 6210 (it's a full modem) via IrDa, and succedded, but ppp doesn't negotiate the connection. Well it's problably my error... 3. Support for graphics chip is better from Xfree 4.1.0, but there sould be set Option "ShadowStatus" in XF86Config-4, because very often whole PC freezes during scrolling. My opinion: THE BEST DISTRO FOR A NOTEBOOK! |

After countless attempts, the following worked on my system,
regarding X and Ethernet: Do the install, accept all parameters the X configuration provides (even though they are wrong). Reboot. In /etc/X11, replace XF86Config-4 and XF86Config by XF86Config_CyberXP.txt (WARNING: fix line breaks in this file.) Adjust keyboard entry if necessary (Option "XkbLayout"). In /etc/modules.conf, replace "eepro100" by "e100". Reboot and enjoy! Very useful is this link: http://www.roe.ac.uk/~hme/tosh4600/ |

Only problem with 8.0 is that at install time only let
me choose packages from CD 1. Laptop has a 1.26 GB HD and 48 Mb RAM, I'm
only using like 600 MB of it. Speakers have ugly sound, I plug my Sony earphones and problem solved. I use it to learn new things, listen to my Samba mounted mp3 collection and when I use it outside my LAN I lug around mp3 CDs, NES ROM CDs and books burned on CD. CD is a 10x that works great. Has a internal 28.8 modem that works great. Video card C&T 65555 displaying 800*600 at 16bpp OK. Infrared not tested but should work. PCMCIA "el cheapo" 100 mbps LAN card OK. |
