Everything Installed automatically except the Winmodem.  X goes to blinking cursor when trying to access HardDrake.  Have to switch instances to reboot. Aside from that major snafoo, it kicks Winblows butt.  Graphics even look better.

Mandrake 8.0 supports the built-in sound device "out-of-the-box," whereas

No probs with the install. The modem is a winmodem, so I didn't bother trying to muck with it. I had Caldera 2.4 Desktop on it previously and I had a real hard time getting XFree86 to figure out what kind of video card! MANDRAKE ROCKS!

Everything works except for this: suspend doesn't work nicely with external+(USB) mouse. Too bad. Other than that - fine: modem (PC Card Xircom Gold), sound, X11 - no problems, worked out of the box. Had to manually edit XF86Config to make it use both touchpad and external mouse, but this was not too hard.

Locks up on transition from Init 5 to just about anything else. This happens randomly but about 50% of the time. It also happened when I had 8.0 installed. Other than that, the 8.1 beta has some rough edges in regards to my USB mouse, but that was easy to fix. The 8.0 install performed flawlessly and was essentially a hands off affair.

 External packages needed:
- graphics (Geforce2Go) work with the latest NVidia drivers;
- internal linmodem works with ltmodem driver.
MDK working things (pluses): sound, infra-red, pcmcia PocketZip drive, internal NIC, basic things (keyboard, mice, HDD etc.)
Non-working things (minuses): the two hibernation modes hang the computer badly (don't ever close the lid when the machine is up); globally, esoteric APM support.
Untested: S-video, twinview, USB.
3-4
same
8.0
The installer hangs unless you pass pcmcia=no to the kernel, or remove any pcmcia cards. You can get PCMCIA working by installing a later version of pcmcia-cs. Also, I found the DMA is not enabled on hard drives by default, so enabling this should give you a speed boost. No matter how hard I tried, the installer refused to install XFree86 4, so I
had to do that manually to get the NVIDIA drivers working. After running the default KDE media player, XMMS won't play sound until X is restarted. HardDrake hangs the machine when trying to detect hardware.

Mandrake 8.0 with no problem. For use with docking station and external monitor, a newer version of the Xwindows driver r128_drv.o will be necessary, otherwise you have to keep using the hotkey to switch between external CRT and LCD manually - the driver makes it automatic.
8.1 - installs fine - same problem as above with video - there is a cooker version that fixes it. The new DEVFS creates a conflict with the floppy controller at boot - says resource is in use - will not see a floppy drive in the bay or parallel port attached. This worked fine in release 8.0 - lspnp sees the controller - the devfs loads the fd0 tree - you get an error trying to mount the floppy drive - says /dev/fd0 is not a valid device. [tom: Check 8.1 Errata page.]

Latitude CPx450
6.1
Initial install of adapted XFree 3.x based on notes on the Linux Notebook HQ. XFree86 4.x worked "out of the box".
Only problem: the cooling system that doesn't always turn on in time, and causes the system to freeze through overheating :~ This is not OS-related.

KDE is the only Desktop manager which contains a good battery power control.

Had to compile OSS drivers for maestro3 sound card but I believe they are included in kernel 2.4.x (mdk 8.0) Suspend is a bit dodgy. Not a fault in ML as far I can see, just the video registers aren't always reset properly(!)

Excellent stuff, very few problems except I couldn't fix the power saving
policy(annoying)... especially when closing the laptop cover, I just have
to switch off and back on, fsck etc.
Something else : when starting X with an external monitor, everything is fine but when I switch from the LCD panel to a monitor, the refresh rate stays at 60Hz.Note : BIOS is latest

No problem except for power management : when closing the
laptop cover , unable to restore power when opening it back up...

Very poor initial installation, XFree won't run at all. But with a few tweaks you can make it run. Docking support is difficult but works.

Upgrading to XF86 4.1.0 is necessary for the ATI Mobility to have RENDER capability so that Anti-aliasing works on KDE.

I tried 8.0 on this machine but reverted to Red Hat 7.1 because of the poor LCD screen performance. This is ironic since the reverse was the case for Mandrake 7.1 and RH 7.0.

I have 2 CSx, 1 had Red Hat 6.2 and the other Mandrake 8.1.  There was no comparison. I then installed Red Hat 7.2 which worked allright.  After a month of working side by side, there was no comparison and now I'm running 2 CSx's side by side running Mandrake 8.1.....  XF86 even recognised the External 21" Sun Monitor+with no problem.  The only issue that I've had so far is getting the sound to work.

Figuring out how to install with only one of the floppy drive OR the CDROM drive in place was tricky.  I don't have a port adapter so I couldn't connect both at the same time.  The computer would not allow booting from the CD.
In the end I created a bootdisk for Windows and copied the files onto the root c:\ drive.  This way I could get it to boot up with CDROM support, and then access the Mandrake CD to install normally.

Everything works apart from sound on vanilla install; to get this working you need the commercial OSS drivers..(might want to pay for this as well to be able to use it for more than 20 mins).

It works fine except for the sound, which is very iffy - you will need to
use sndconfig, but it's not really worth the effort: xmms doesn't really like
it :(

I use it as a small router and firewall.  Works great with two Ethernet

only sound has been a problem (ess 1888). use windowmaker -KDE and GNOME both too slow. use X 4.10 - no problems at all. dual-boot machine.
