Hai all

I am newbie in Linux. I have installed Mandrake 10.1 and I am awed by its performance. It just works.. Now I am learning more things slowly. I try to play online movie clips that are usually configured to run in Windows media player by the website. When I try to play such online clips, I get the message that I should install some plugins.

How and where do I get these MPlayer plugins for windows media player ??

My second question is when I try to also stream online songs, which are configured to run in Realplayer (I have properlly installed RP) it still wouldnt run. could you pelase tell me what I am doing wrong ?

thanks a lot...

hello and welcome aboard :)

i can only answer your first question as i never used realplayer :juggle:

on the top of this page there is a link for "easyurpmi". click on it and follow its instructions. it will set up your software mirrors. you will need to activate the plf-free and plf-nonfree mirrors. once you have set up all mirrors, you can select mplayer from the mandriva control center → software → install or using a terminal (the black monitor icon). for the terminal, type "su" to become root (followed by root password of course), then type "urpmi mplayer".

you should perhaps also install the mozplugger package for firefox from the mirrors.

good luck :)

For having playback of all videofiles on mplayer and its frontends (or xine and its frontends) you must install the codecs package. It's not on the main Mandriva repositories, due to licencing issues, but you can get it from Penguin Liberation Front (PLF). See easyurpmi.zarb.org for more.

Xine frontends like Kaffeine stream real audio files fine (if the full codecs pack is installed), but you can also use Real's player, or Helix Player (which is the opensource edition of the Real player).

I use only kaffeine, because it simply works- so no need for a second player.

i have installed the plug-in as you instructed. I followed the procedure and everythings installed. but still when i try to stream online video clips I get the following message...

This page contains information of a type (application/x-mplayer2) that can only be viewed with the appropriate Plug-in.

I still have problem with streaming online songs too...

thanks...

so sorry to bug you guys .. but i tried what the article has said.. i installed the mozplugger properly but i was not able to install mozplugin for streaming online videos.. i get the following message.. (i have also downloaded the proper gecko-sdk package)

i tried to configure after downloading the gecko-sdk package

# ./configure --with-gecko-sdk= [path of gecko-sdk package]

and this is the message i get..

Using new (v1.7+) gecko-sdk

checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config

checking for gtk+-2.0... Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.

Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc'

to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable

No package 'gtk+-2.0' found

configure: WARNING: *** Running in X mode - Limited Features ***

checking for gthread-2.0... Package gthread-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.

Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gthread-2.0.pc'

to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable

No package 'gthread-2.0' found

configure: error: Missing gthread package

i tried to check PKG_CONFIG_PATH but couldnt find it... I am missing something ?

Obviously, the GTK2-devel packages, which are a must for compiling GTK2 applications and are obviously not installed.

I have not read the above tutuorial, but you don't really have to compile anything: If you set up URPMI repos properly (including PLF) then everything is available as stock.

Ya I first did that too.. i went to Easy-urmpi site and installed everything.. i went to this link

http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/

and installed as given. i also went to its test website, i can see the movie .. it plays but the sound doesnt come.. is that file encoded without sound or is there some problem with my sound ? cuz I can play songs etc ... and when i go to some other site to play online clips it again gives me the same error message

the application needs .... requires (application/x-mplayer2) plugin etc

thanks....
