Hi all,

I'm just a newbie for linux.

I have K8M800 mother board from MSI with S3 unichrome graphics.

I tried installing Mandrake 10.1 x86_64 on it (i need to use noapic option for installation to proceed).

I could install it but it installs VESA driver for display.

I tried using driver for mandrake given at viaarena but it dosent work.

I could not run tvtime as VESA dosen't support advance featurs.

Has anyone installed via drivers for this motherboard?

Is it the case that only 64bit version has got this problem and 32 bit supports it?

I can see new LE2005 release. Does it support S3 unichrome driver?

I can see that sources are availble on unicrome project site but no detailed information on how to compile the driver. Any help?

Would you explain what you did? I have found freqquently that going over the process again can discover errors or forgotten steps.

Hi Ixthusdan,

I did it couple of months back.

The sequence was 1. driver installation 2. epia patch for kernal.

The problem was after loading module X server could detect the chipset but errors out as screens not found and no usable modes.

Anyway..

Now I'm going to try it again as i could see driver source release from viaarena and new mandrake release LE2005. I will update the happenings here.

Before doing it i just want to confirm that this problem is not specific to x86_64 release and is also with i586. Then i'll go ahead and try only x86_64 version.

Thanks for looking into it,

Nishant

I did the installation of LE2005 x86_64. it went well but got problem during graphics configuration. It could detect my graphics as S3 Unichrome but during testing it says

An error occurred

(EE) Failed to load module "/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/extension/libglx.a (once-only module, 32767)

(EE) Failed to load module "via" (module does not exist, 0)

Try to change some parameters

being a newbie not sure how to go about this. can anyone help me out

They are not for the new Mandrake nor for 64 bit version. I have already tried them with previous versions but got error saying wrong module.

I could get the sources for the driver and will try to build from it.

just want to if any kernel patch for EPIA is needed or not.

I have kernel 2.6.11.6mdk

any idea?

Thanks,

Nishant

Hi,

I did try compiling the viafb driver from the source available on viaarena site.

I copied the source to folder /usr/src/linux/viafb

then "make" inside the viafb folder gave me errors like

error: structure has no member named cursor

...... (and many more similar to this)

*** [Default] Error 2

and did not create any driver file.

Its readme asks to make frame buffer as <M> module in kernel config.

I tried doing that using menuconfig but there is only <*>inbuilt option available and it does not accept module option.

The kernel is 2.6.11.6mdk

Any insight on this?

Hi,

I'm affraid I won't be of much help :(

I had the best results using the Unichrome drivers, as you can see on my (not so) little article on my web site. However, on their site, they say "K8M800 and PM800/CN400 support is still limited". You may try your luck, though:

Yves.
