Rescuing Data from Win98 by using Linux

It seems to me like you are having major hardware problems on that machine. That could be why win98 doesn't boot up anymore. Maybe you should physically remove the harddrive and stick it in a different machine to rescue the contents.

Follow-up:

 

My brother got the laptop in for repair. They said the RAM (64MB) was toast... so they're going to replace it. I suggested getting more, but it's an old 'model', apparently you can't put in more.

 

Seems the HD is fine ater all...

 

However, I did learn something trying to rescue the data. Next time something like this happens, I think I will be more prepared.
