KWrite or Kate signal error when on root [solved]

Hi there

When trying to start KWrite or Kate from a root-terminal, they would crash giving a Signal Error, and telling something about "connection refused". I had this problem since my fresh install of Mandriva 2010.

I solved it by doing a simple

su xhost +

KWrite or Kate where able to start after that. Curiously, when I enabled access control again by doing a

su xhost -

, both apps didn't want to crash anymore.

I didn't find a solution in this forum, so I thought I'll share.

cheers

In KDE 4.x, the usual method for doing this is by typing su -

{that's su<space><hypen>}

EDIT: In case I was unclear.

$ su - {press Enter key}

type in root password {press ENTER key}

# kwrite {press ENTER key}

The $ and # are not typed in. They represent what you see when logged on as a regular user $ or as root #.

From a root console or from root Dolphin or Konqueror

I get:

No protocol specified

kwrite: cannot connect to X server :0.0

What's the fix for that?

Just a couple, maybe there are more:

1. Use "xdesu dolphin"

2. Configure sudo, add your user to the "wheel" group and then either 'sudo dolphin" or install kdesudo (a standard for kubuntu, but it should also exist for Mandriva) and start the app like "kdesudo dolphin".
