DSL modem recommendation for 2008

Hello,

Finally looking to upgrade to dsl from dial-up, and running Mandriva 2008. Is there a recommended modem that would be basically plug-and-play?? Looked in the compatibility guide and found no entries. USB or ethernet connection better?? Not looking for wireless or any of that - reliability and ease of use are my priorities.

Thanks for any insights.

Regards -- Roger

Depending on what you want to do. If you want one computer to access the internet, then you can use one of these:

http://www.netgear.co.uk/adsl_ethernet_modem_dm111p.php

this connects directly to your PC via ethernet card and so of course you then need a firewall on your machine to protect it from anyone trying to connect. Another alternative, is buy a DSL router - I've always been buying Netgear, and so the Netgear DG834 is ideal. It comes in various models, DG834, DG834G and DG834GT - I have the GT model, which offers 108mbps wireless but if you don't need it then you can buy a lesser model. Most generally have wireless these days and you can always turn the wireless off anyhow (which is what I did at first). It also has a firewall, so you don't need to configure one on your PC.

Or, if you want your Linux machine to be a router/gateway for all other machines in the house, then use the first one I mentioned - just requires extra configuration of your PC for routing/firewall.

I have the DG834G (with wireless switched off) - had no problems. :)

Disable ipv6, like daniewicz suggested, and pin certain DNS server to your netork config- else Mandriva is using the DNS server of the DHCP server.

I suggest using the OpenDNS free servers:

nameserver 208.67.222.222

nameserver 208.67.220.220

These DNS servers resolve fine and fast for pretty much any site.

Thanks for the recommendations. Just wanted to clarify what is happening - as an example, I can browse eBay, but when I try and long into my account, it 'connects' to the login page based on dialog on the bottom of the page, and then just hangs (usually use Mozilla, but Konqueror says 97% loaded then can't get further).

Also, are there any security issues with disabling the ipv6?? Looked a bit on the web, and it seems like an address extender, but with some security features.....

Good idea, but clearing the cache did not help. Still hangs in the same place.

I did think that it stalled on all authentication sites, but it does work logging into yahoo mail...... so at least in one case an authentication site does not stall out....??
