Kazel
Hello... I've download nVidia driver from nvidia.com... When I tried to install it in init 3 mode, I got this error message: ERROR: If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure you either have configured kernel sources matching your kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed on your system. If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel installed on your system. If you specified a separate output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option. Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option. Any ideas what to do???? Edited August 2, 2009 by Kazel
daniewicz
I am able to install the nvidia driver from their website on my Mandriva 2008.1 system. I need to have the following packages installed before I attempt to install the nvidia driver: kernel-desktop-2.6.24.7-2mnb kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.24.7-2mnb kernel-desktop-latest kernel-headers

SilverSurfer60
You need to install the *-devel-* rpm that is matching your kernel. :)
Kazel
You need to install the *-devel-* rpm that is matching your kernel. :) I did... But it doesn't solve the problem yet...
SilverSurfer60
The many times that I compiled the nVidia drivers this way, the problem you are experiencing came from the fact that I did not have the correct sources that matched the installed kernel. I know you say you installed the sources but it is worth checking that they match exactly what you have installed. Not 'kernel-latest' but the full titled sources. See if that helps. Kazel
Well... I'm stuck... I installed all packages with *-devel-*, then my screen show nothing but blank... I guess I'll reinstall my mandriva and install my nvidia with dkms packages... Thanks 4 the answers guys.....
scarecrow
You don't need kernel-devel to build the nvidia driver. kernel-headers is just enough. Do you probably use the server kernel image? (give the output of "uname -a") Under that kernel, the prorietary nvidia driver won't build- you need to boot the desktop kernel, or some other one- just not the kernel-server. PS: Reinstalling for such common issues is always a bad idea under Linux- or at best time not well spent. Kazel
I've reinstalled my Mandriva... (at least... ) and i've installed my nVidia driver with these packages: ==> nvidia173-kernel-2.6.29.1-desktop-4mnb-173.14.18-2mdv2009.1.i586.rpm ==> x11-driver-video-nvidia173-173.14.18-2mdv2009.1.i586.rpm ==> dkms-nvidia173-173.14.18-2mdv2009.1.i586.rpm Everything's ok, include the compiz effect.. But still... I keep trying to install my nvidia with the driver that I've downloaded from nvidia.com... I wonder what is this error means: ERROR: If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure you either have configured kernel sources matching your kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed on your system. If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel installed on your system. SilverSurfer60
Most likely the driver you are trying to build does not match your kernel. :)
AussieJohn
Just out of interest since you now have the Mandriva nvidia video drivers working AOK then why are you even bothering to still insist on trying to install the proprietary nvideo driver???. It will do no more for you than the Mandriva one does. In 2008.1-Spring and earlier (over past 3.5years and 7 Mandriva versions), I always successfully used the proprietary nvidia driver and always installed the devel kernel as well as the Headers. Never had any troubles installing it. In 2009-Spring I have been using the Mandriva supplied driver only because it is now so easy to install. Cheers. John. daniewicz
But still... I keep trying to install my nvidia with the driver that I've downloaded from nvidia.com... Which NVidia driver are you trying to install? It appears to me you need the legacy driver 173.14.20. I have had errors in the past when I tried to install the wrong version. Kazel
In 2009-Spring I have been using the Mandriva supplied driver only because it is now so easy to install. Is Mandriva supplied driver is better than driver that I've downloaded from nvida.com??? If that so, maybe I should close this case... :D I just want to compare which is the best, the Mandriva supplied driver, or from nvidia.com... B) Which NVidia driver are you trying to install? It appears to me you need the legacy driver 173.14.20. I have had errors in the past when I tried to install the wrong version. I used nVidia GeForce 5500 FX with legacy driver 173XXX...
