I am completely stumped - My Shuttle K45 won't play sound and I don't know anything about sound cards!

I have a K45 too and it plays sound fine both with mandriva Linux 2008.1 and 2009.1.

What Linux version did you install? Do you have Pulseaudio enabled or disabled?

What programs did you try to test sound with?

Hmm, 2008... you may have an arts problem. What's the output (as user) of

grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf

and

/usr/bin/artsshell status

If the arts sound server is running, I would suggest that you try disabling it. Then test your sound again with an audio application.

The arts server does not appear to be installed:

[epretorious@localhost ~]$ which artsshell
  which: no artsshell in (/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/qt3//bin:/usr/lib/qt3//bin:/home/epretorious/bin:/usr/lib/qt3//bin)
  [epretorious@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep arts
  [epretorious@localhost ~]$

...but the hda_intel modules are defined in /etc/modprobe.conf:

[epretorious@localhost ~]$ grep sound /etc/modprobe.conf
  alias sound-slot-0 snd_hda_intel

...and the snd_* modules have been loaded:

[epretorious@localhost ~]$ sudo lsmod | grep snd

OK, if you're not using the arts sound server, I would suggest that you (as root) run

alsaconf

to set things up. Then (also as root) run

alsactl store

to save your settings. Now try your sound again with an audio app.

check with alsamixer (command line) that all volumes are set to maximum and that none are muted.

alsamixer croaks:

       [justine@localhost ~]$ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

       [justine@localhost ~]$ which alsamixer
       /usr/bin/alsamixer

       [justine@localhost ~]$ rpm -qf /usr/bin/alsamixer
       alsa-utils-1.0.15-0.rc1.1mdv2008.0

alsaconf isn't installed:

The alsamixer error message proved to be the clue that enabled me to crack the case (using Google).

Specifically, Genotoo Bug #208016 & the post "EeePC in-kernel ALSA difficulties [solved]" in the Gentoo forums described the symptoms and error messages that I was experiencing so I dedicded to try boomslang's suggested solution:

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

to append a necessary line.

...and, viola, sound works properly! :D

Thanks!
