Ubuntu is rather slow compared to Mandy, and Nautilus is the slowest filemanager out there, by a huge margin. OK - but the facts on my system are that the CPU usage pretty much at idle with KDE4 on Mandriva was about 40% and less than 10% on Ubuntu with GNOME . This is making a difference! i.e. I can open one of my many 4-5MB OpenOffice Writer files and use the mouse wheel to navigate without massive delays and it shooting all over the place when it eventually responds!
