Gentoo X Freeze

Recommended Posts

I decided to move this to a new thread as the old one was all over the place and stagnating.

My X is freezing in Gentoo, but only at certain places:

When I open Mozilla and try to type in an address, X freezes - in fact, anywhere where I try and type in Mozilla (or Firebird) it freezes, I tried to add a user yesterday and this happened.

I know this is a strange example, but it also freezes when I play Gnibbles, but only when I touch a 'fruit'

These freezes are religious and strong, I need to hard-reset my machine every time.

I completely redid my computer in a desperate attempt to rid myself of these feezes, but they still occur. I have managed to clean up my X logs and no serious errors occur. I have tried using my XF86Config file from my Mandrake setup and it did not help.

The Nvidia module is loading without a hitch and GLX is up and running, my screen is setup properly.

These freezes occur in Gnome and also is solo-Fluxbox (I haven't tried any other WMs).

I am totally stuck and if I can't get this sorted out soon I am going to have to write Gentoo off and I don't want to, because I have spent an incredible amount of time on this.

EDIT: I am starting to believe that this might be either a keyboard or a font-server problem, but I have no way to tell. Where can I confirm what my keyboard layout is? And what other keyboard drivers can I use, besides the default "keyboard" and how could I test the font server? If I type something in Gnome terminal, for example, it doesn't freeze.

# Standard VGA Device:

#

# Section "Device"

#    Identifier	"Standard VGA"

#    VendorName	"Unknown"

#    BoardName	"Unknown"

# The chipset line is optional in most cases.  It can be used to override

# the driver's chipset detection, and should not normally be specified.

#    Chipset	"generic"

# The Driver line must be present.  When using run-time loadable driver

# modules, this line instructs the server to load the specified driver

# module.  Even when not using loadable driver modules, this line

# indicates which driver should interpret the information in this section.

#    Driver     "vga"

# The BusID line is used to specify which of possibly multiple devices

# this section is intended for.  When this line isn't present, a device

# section can only match up with the primary video device.  For PCI

# devices a line like the following could be used.  This line should not

# normally be included unless there is more than one video device

# intalled.

#    BusID      "PCI:0:10:0"

#    VideoRam	256

#    Clocks	25.2 28.3

# Any number of ServerLayout sections may be present.  Each describes

# the way multiple screens are organised.  A specific ServerLayout

# section may be specified from the X server command line with the

# When now ServerLayout section is present, the first Screen section

# is used alone.

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present

   Identifier  "Simple Layout"

# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally

# the relative position of other screens.  The four names after

# of the primary screen.  In this example, screen 2 is located to the

# right of screen 1.

   Screen "Screen1"

# Each InputDevice line specifies an InputDevice section name and

# optionally some options to specify the way the device is to be

# used.  Those options include "CorePointer", "CoreKeyboard" and

# "SendCoreEvents".

   InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"

My hardware: Nvidia Geforce 4 MX440, 17" Digital monitor, I believe this keyboard is a us, 101 (I tried plugging in another keyboard, it did not help).

I messed around with other problems, so far it is restricted to Mozilla, Mozilla-Firebird (whenever I type something) and Gnibbles (if the snake touches anything).
