What kind of zip drive is it?

All the insmod errors are probably mod's built into the kernel and they don't know were to go because there hardware isn't there.

Xfee, don't know why it's locking up on you. Anything specific your doing when it comes to a hault?

Keyboard, no idea. Is it just a standard keyboard and you choose the correct setting in xfree86config?

Are the insmod errors on boot or login? If it's login then loads of people (including myself) have had this issue. There seems to be some kind of bug or something that causes them to be generated - even though there aren't any problems (I know you have problems but you know what I mean).

The solution is simply to pretend it isn't happening by installing and starting metalog. Add it to the default runlevel. These errors just get logged but you don't have to worry about them any more - and I really don't think there's anything to worry about...

Sorry I fliped out on you, I just get very agrivated with people that shutdown and diss other distoros, especially when they don't seem to be giving it much effort.

just would like to comment on this.....i understand this but with gentoo there is ALOT of documantation at ones disposal and one does not even have to post on the forum to have worked hard at getting gento working the way they desire. i dunno if i ever posted on their forum or not but i DID spent ALOT ALOT ALOT of time trying to get gentoo working the way it should have, it is still a distro of linux after all.

the install of gentoo was a snap but a huge waste of time. come on 16v hours for a marginal speed increase on the application use regularily (yes i did use modest CFLAGS...actually very basic CFLAGS) i used everything i knew and searched the forum for the rest. when i did ask question (mostly if not 100% on irc). they mostly went unanswered or no one wanted to help. while i got the system mostly working it was a bug fest.

heck even stuff worked better for me when i compiled the source myself rather than use portage.

i understand they have fixed alot but please don't assume that some of us dislike gentoo because we are idiots. to me gento is a waste of time. too much goes in for very little in return.

on the otherhand you are correct that it is very annoying when a newcomer is vague or simply not even putting in an effort to even help themselves.

Well, I put in a lot of work, so I don't know where that assumption comes from, but I'm tired of defending myself, so back to my problems:

X Freezing is the biggest one. I posted on the Gentoo board and, as with Sarah, no-one seems to care, so back to the MANDRAKE users board for my Gentoo help:

X only freezes at some points, it is very weird: When I open up Mozilla/Firebird and start typing an address, it freezes religiously! If I open up Gnibbles, I can move the snake around, but the moment I touch a 'fruit' - the system freezes! This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen, and VERY irritating.

The insmod errors refer to my network card (Realtek), which is working! I'll look at my kernel setup again, but, as I said before, I've done this before in the same way without problems. The errors are on boot.

My Zip drive is a 250MB Parallel port Iomega.

Also, openoffice isn't on my cds! Yes, I copied my portage tree off the cds and all the other packages on the CD (Gnome, etc.) are there.

And so we go... thanks for the help, as usual

Those of us who hang here alot are spoiled by the rapid response times!! Other boards require days before a response, if any. Let's face it, we are the best at response time. So, SoulSe, the others aren't bad, we are just good.

Gentoo takes alot of work. I had my box back in about three days, and tweaking took a week. (I had to get used to it!) Archlinux was up in a few hours, and again tweaking took a week. Between the two, gentoo was cool, but Arch was real linuxish. (NOT A FLAME BAIT) I don't even use Mandrake update! I do stuff manually because, well, I don't like automatic-fix-my box-but-don't-tell-me-what-or-why! Personally, I learned more from arch than gentoo, but that's me. In the end, I made my box look and act identically with both gentoo and arch. If I didn't have broadband, I would have never used gentoo at all. It would have simply taken too long.

Every distro has a market. None of them are "bad" and none of then are for everybody. Stating pro's and con's is good conversation. Getting hot and bothered about it is really quite pointless.

Are you getting any log messages from XFree?

ZIP drive, I have no experience with, (don't have one) someone has to have one and be able to help you with that, we hope.

try

emerge -k openoffice-bin

Did you see that in /usr/portage/packages/All ?

This whole deal sounds sorta like my week-long Debian fiasco.

I asked question after question, and always got excellent replies from a few of you guys, BUT eventually it was too much for me.

The finishing blow came when I accidently installed SuSE over the Debian, and that actually turned out to be a good thing, cuz I really like it, it all makes a lot of sense, even to me, and configured almost painlessly.

I still use primarily Mandrake, but I've really taken a liking to the German's SuSE as well.

They are both excellent.

Here is some stuff I have been doing: I installed fluxbox, to see if the problem persisted with other WMs, it did occur, exactly the same way. So the problem is most likely with X. I tried changing keyboard setting and edited out the standard vga setup in XFree86Config, to force ue of nvidia drivers. GLX errors show up in XFree's logs, although when running glxinfo, no problems show up. Also, I am aware of the redundant resolutions and I will edit them out this evening, I doubt they could be causing the problem as it loads my default 1280x1024.

Here is my XFree log:
