Which Nvidia driver to download from site?

Which video driver should I download from the Nvidia site for my ASUS V7100PRO64Pure64MB Video:

IA 32

IA 64

Free BSD

nForce Drivers

I had to change the XF86Config-4 file to "nv" (with much help) to get the system to start. Also, the FAQ describes the installation by downloading the file to the target computer. The "Linux" computer is not online. Can I transfer the files to my "Linux" computer on a CDR after download and then install them?

Thanks, Will

I loaded the drivers using the FAC as a guide, edited the Config-4 file and everything seemed to go according to plan until I rebooted.

I got the message:

NV: could not get NV card info (invalid argument)

(EE) NVIDIA(0) Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module

(EE) Screen(s) found but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error: no screens found

Any ideas? -Will

your Device Section has no driver...add

Driver "nvidia"

so that it looks like;

Identifier "device1"

VendorName "nVidia Corporation"

BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)"

Driver "nvidia"

Option "DPMS"

Assuming you have the latest driver, change /etc/modules.conf to;

probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi

probeall usb-interface usb-ohci ehci-hcd

alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394

alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0

above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia

#alias char-major-195 nvidia

I d/k why this is randomly happening to people.

Did you try

modprobe nvidia

? If so, what happened?

Also, add

nvidia

to

/etc/modules (not modules.conf....modules)

Made the changes. In the /etc/modules file "NVdriver" is also listed -should it be there?

Unfortunately it still won't start. When booting in failsafe there is the line: modprobe - Can't locate module fb0

once when I tried "modprobe nvidia" I got the message "insmod nvidia failed". I haven't been able to replicate this failure since when I start in failsafe, change to root ,type "modprobe nvidia", exit then type "startx" at the sh-2.05b prompt, I get the message "command not found"

Comment out the NVdriver as well;

#NVdriver

fb0 shouldn't be a prob.

If you have;

sh-2.05b

for a prompt something's not rt. I've had that on a perfectly good install and all was ok, but on a new install?......I d/k

After the above, start linux instead of failsafe and if X fails try

modprobe nvidia

startx

That looks like the Single-user Mode prompt. Is that where Failsafe puts you? Can you run X in Failsafe? I was not aware that you could. I thought Failsafe was only supposed to load system-vital modules and leave extraneous ones like framebuffer support, sound, etc out.

No luck, :cry: (Emoticon inserted at 9yo son's insistance)

It does say in failsafe "Going single user".

When I tried to start Linux I ended up with a blank screen. How can I get to a prompt while starting Linux - before or during the blank screen that will allow me to try

modprobe nvidia

startx

Try Ctrl-Alt-(F2 or F3 or F4, etc)

You could also try to hit I, during boot, when it asks you if you want to boot interactively (on a relatively fast machine, you actually have to hit I just before it asks, becuase if you hold it down too long, it doesn't recognize it when it needs to and if you wait for it to say that, you aren't quick enough) and see if there are any errors at any stage. Tell it not to attempt to start x or whatever.

When I boot interactively there are no errors (everything "OK") until it ends with a blank screen.

How do I tell it not to start X. The closest I could find was "Starting X Font Server". When I said not to start it, I still ended up at the blank screen.

Should I simply do a total reinstall? Perhaps this is all due to "Operator error" and I screwed something up along the way. I know it would go faster this time around (e.g., it must have taken me 45 minutes just to discover "i" would allow me to edit a file).

To start without x, at lilo hit esc and type "linux 3"

If you can boot to a prompt, log in and type startx. It will render an error list.
