How to configure and use smartmontools

Hello all,

I've been trying to monitor the health of my hard drives, Once bitten twice shy.

I have installed smartmontools, as this appears to be the tool of choice for modern drives, and there doesn't appear to be a wester digital linux tool.

Upon installing smartmontools, I was told:

Edit /etc/smartd.conf

and add uncomment the DEVICESCAN option and set email to recieve alerts.

I have one boot drive, sdc and a raid array which I guess must be sda and sdb?

Can someone please help me with this?

On the smartmontools web site it shows a GUI, is this available in linux? I sure hope so. I've looked through my menus and I cannot see smartmontools anywhere.

smartmontools doesn't have GUI included, there is a separate GUI app called GSmartControl, but I can't see it in the Mandriva repositories.

On the GSmartControl website ( http://gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/home/index.php/en/Downloads ) it says:

Mandriva Linux: Starting with Mandriva Linux 2009.1, GSmartControl is available in Mandriva Linux.

You may use urpmi gsmartcontrol or rpmdrake to install it.

Additionally, packages are available at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/alex_sh/

To find the device names of all drives you have you could for example run the following command on a console as root:

fdisk -l 2>/dev/null|grep "^Disk /dev/[h|s]"

Tux, thanks heaps for that reply! Very much appreciated.

# fdisk -l 2>/dev/null|grep "^Disk /dev/[h|s]"
Disk /dev/sda: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes
Disk /dev/sdb: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes
Disk /dev/sdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes

So I was right, my raid array consists of sda and sdb.

Perhaps I need to wait for 2009.1.........

Perhaps I need to wait for 2009.1.........

Why?

at the link I gave you above there are 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 packages too:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/alex_sh/

They are just not in the official Mandriva repos, but you can still download and install them yourself.

Thanks Tux, I know have a GUI for using the SMART capabilities.

Quick question if anyone knows, I have two disks, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/dm-0, I assume these are due to my raid array. My physical three disks show up perfectly otherwise.
