I didn't know where to post that.

Hi,

I'm not anonimous I'm roland :(

I did it, I damaged my /home partition !!

( fortunately at home not at work )

WARNING

If ever DiskDrake displays something like:

your partitions had been renumbered:

hda5 is now hda4

hda6 is now hda5

...

You must know that:

DISKDRAKE THAT IS USUALLY A GOOD SOFTWARE IS NOW A PIECE OF B"#²~ù@T

EXIT IMMEDIATELY

DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR /etc/fstab AND YOUR /etc/lilo.conf

ACCORDING TO THE NEW NUMBER, RUN lilo AND REBOOT !

You have been warned

Now the question is:

How do I restaure my /home that was on hda6 ?????

Do you know a software to restaure a damaged partition ?

Help please

roland

Did they just get renumbered or is it damaged? If it's renumbered and you need to access fstab, and lilo.conf, boot cd1>F1>rescue>Mount you partitions under /mnt (you'll get a bunch of errors, but hopefully /, and /usr are mounted)> then chroot /mnt and use vi to edit the files, and run lilo -v. If you don't know what they are now, you can use parted (on the cd's) or I think fdisk -l will tell ya. If damaged, you'll need to run the prog for you type partition (fsck, reiserfsck, etc...)

Only /home partition ( now hda6 ) had been damaged.

On DiskDrake:

Before the change it was like this:

hda1 Windows

empty space

hda6 swap

hda7 / ext3

hda5 /home ext3

After the change it's like that

hda1 Windows

hda5 (was empty space)

hda7 swap

hda8 / ext3

hda6 /home ext3

I had trouble formating hda5 but no messages.

I exited DiskDrake, modified fstab and lilo.conf, run lilo and rebooted.

But now hda6 is damaged. didn't want to mount.

I let fsck run at boot time when I was asked.

Now hda6 wants only to be mounted as ext2 and is empty !!

Thanks I'll try parted.

If I run

fsck /dev/hda it says its clean

fsck.ext3 /dev/hda: same

DiskDrake now see hda6 as a ext3

but I can't mount it as ext3. Only as ext2. ??

Other ideas after the info I give here ? thanks

The only idea I have now is to run parted mkfspart to force the partition being ext3 as it is supposed to be, next run parted rescue.

I have little hope it will work.

I will wait a few days before doing that, hoping for more ideas  .

Anyway that's not a drama if I lose all, I will not spend €1000 to fix the partition.

Ok, I've played so much with partitions before and never lost any byte that this time I was may be too confident.

So until I prove there is something wrong with DiskDrake it's still right.(I'm going to do some test in a few days)

If you know a software other than fsck or parted to fix partitions I'm still interested. Thanks
