mdemers883
hello all, this is my first post here. I am currently enrolled in a 14 week red hat 9 course at school so I am very new to linux. I just finished installing mandrake 9.1 on my home system so I can get a taste of another distro and become more versatile. I would eventually once I have gained enough experience switch to linux entirely. My only prob after installing mandrake is that I can't get connected to the net. I think it may be a driver issue. This is the nic card I'm running: Linksys wireless PCI card model number: WMP11 2.4ghz card running 802.11b any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. mdemers883
when using uname -r it found this: 2.4.21 - 0.13mdkenterprise when I tried /sbin/lspci it didn't recongnize the command

liquidzoo
Looks like that card uses the prism2_pci driver. Open a console, su to root and type modprobe prism2_pci and see if you get any errors. Post the output here so we can work through it. If it does work, you should get a wlan0 entry in your Mandrake Control Center under Hardware (HardDrake). If you get that, we can work through the rest from there. Try the modprobe and see what happens.

I did the modprobe like you said and here is the output: root@localhost user1]# modprobe prism2_pci /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o.gz: init_module: Operation not permitted Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. liquidzoo
Ok, that's kinda what I expected to see. Now we'll try another driver. Try this as root: modprobe orinoco_pci That one should work and give you no errors. If so, we'll go from there.

liquidzoo
Ok, if the modprobe failed it means you don't have something installed. That driver is part of the kernel sources for the 2.4 series on up. Do you have the kernel sources installed? Open a console, su to root and type: urpmi kernel-sources and get them installed. Once you have them installed, try the modprobe again and it should work. fyi, on my system I do have the kernel sources installed and a quick search yields these results: [liquidzoo@DeathStar liquidzoo]$ locate orinoco_pci /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.o.gz /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.25mdk/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.c [liquidzoo@DeathStar liquidzoo]$

mdemers883
I tried the urpmi kernel-sources and this was the output [user1@localhost user1]$ su Password: [root@localhost user1]# urpmi kernel-sources no package named kernel-sources [root@localhost user1]#

bvc
LiquidZoo, ......exactly why do we need the kernel-source?
liquidzoo
Well, according to several sites I read the orinoco drivers (both pcmcia and pci) are included with the kernel version 2.4 and up. Since he is running Mandrake 9.1 which comes with kernel 2.4.21 by default and he doesn't have those drivers on his system, it dawned on me that they might be included in the kernel source. I'm also trying to figure out why he doesn't have them and I do. I know I have the source installed, so I thought it was a good place to start.
