Guest JaFFa
Hi, (BTW this is a newb alert :) ) A little background first, I have used MS stuff for the past 5 years, mainly in work. In the last week I finally took the plunge and installed my first linux os. Mandrake 8.2. Had some problems on install and configuring my gfx, but it now works wonderfuly well. So you now know how new I am to linux :P What I would like to do is use a linux box as a small Intranet server for approx 20 people to access, in a teaching environment. It would be used to deliver a curriculum for the CCNA, and other documentation. My question is what is the minimum hardware requirements for such a config? Thank you in advance for any help you could give me :)
johnnyv
It would depend on what you will be serving. If everything is going to be html then you could get away with low spec hardware. If it was just html I would say a pentium 200 or equivalent amd k6, cyrix. 64 mb ram (more ram is always better) 4 Gb hdd should be heaps unless you have truckloads of html docs I would just do a min install with mandrake 8.1 with apache ( you may want mod_perl mod_php etc..) your documents go in var/www/html/ If you want to serve dynamic web pages and use a database blah blah this should be plenty 500mhz cpu 128mb ram hdd depends on how much you serve mandrake 8.1 or 8.

My home server/gateway/firewall is this: Dual PII 333MHz CPUs 512MB ECC RAM Maxtor 40GB 5400RPM HDD
Guest JaFFa
Thanks linux gurus, this has been a great help for me. :) As for the content it will contain mostly html with flash content and some pdf documents to a maximum of 20 users (this will be more like 10 -12), the beauty of this is that it will reside on a private network and will only be used for this access, it should not have to do anything else so security will not be an issue.

Guest
Do not skip on security on any network. Even if you know all of the users, do not assume that your system is not open to attack. You may need less than you would on a world-accessible Internet. See this site before you make up your mind: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/ . Bluebeard. Guest rsd
> me wishing she was my wife Are you sure? That would probably spoil all the fun. Married two times (unmarried the same number), so I am a bit biased. A girlfriend configuration, exchangeable for a model update once a while would be probably much more enticing proposition!
