Mandrake is selling screensaver adds in order to raise revenue i.e. the regular screensavers will be replaced by advertisements in the download edition. I guess we better gear up for the How To for disabling this crap. Hmm. Maybe we can sell add space on our posts when answering questions.

you could sign up with double click or someone and do it i suppose, probably against their TOS though ;)

edit: whoa, what's far more annoying is "Place a link to your website in every Mandrake Linux 9.2 version: in every browser, a link to your website will be visible on the taskbar and in the bookmark section."

I say if you can't beatem, join em. And I'd like to take this opportunity to annonce the formation of the pmpatrick club. You see that last trip to Vegas wasn't as successful as I had hoped and my postings have seriously cut into my carousing time but you can help!! I have several levels of membership affordable for every budget:

SILVER - Pretty much you just gotta buy me a beer

GOLD - That will take a pint of premium imported ale

PLATINUM - Your gonna have to pay my bar tab

ULTRAPLATINUM - Pay my bar tab and introduce me to your cute sister. I'll take it from there.

Thank you all for your kind support. I think I'll be goin to the punchin wall now. Top of the mornin to ya all.

It'd be interesiting to see how it works, because the download edition is pure open-source. If you embed an advert (which I guess is copyrighted) into an open-source app what happens?

Personnally I don't have a problem with advertising as I ignore it all, but I can understand those who do. What I would say is MDK has to make money somehow and I can think of worse ways than ignorable adverts.

Installation:

We've got that already, only at the moment its only for MDK. Usually I leave my machine to install the stuff on its own anyway so will never see it anyway.

Browser Homepage:

Like I stick with the default anyway.

Bookmarks:

I delete all the bookmarks when I've installed and restore my own from back-ups.

Screensavers:

See answer for homepage

Regarding the screensaver and home page stuff - whatever, but actually building a browser so it contains favourites and links etc to advertisers is, in my opinion, completely not on.

Even if it's possible to get rid of them, I think it's morally wrong of Mandrake to do this (and smells a little like something MS would do)

After reading this - I'm glad I'm no longer using Mandrake - except on my server. And next time I upgrade that I won't be using Mandrake.

This is a shame though - I still think Mdk is a great newbie distro. I can also understand that they need to make money - but not by dictating how my PC should be set up - even if it is only (for now) at browser level

urpme xsreensaver-mdk

urpmi xscreensaver-rh.rpm

OR

rm-fr /

install debian

THis is pretty bad, they need the cash, but this is goin a bit far. But it would be good if they provided an option in MCC to remove it.

Besides, my guess is the ads need you to be connected to the internet. They aren't goin to put em on the discs

And if you get a boxed version will it have ads?

Oh My God! The audacity of these people! I thought they'd just carry on giving me free shit forever! How dare they try and make money!

Ok, enough sarcasm. I hate freeloaders (unless they have no other choice). If you really can't afford to buy Mandy, that's fine, but don't complain about the unwanted extras.

No money = no mandrake. It's that simple. It's business.

I don't have a problem with anyone trying to make money - it's the ways people try to make money that gets to me.

Who are Mandrake to decide what should be in my favourites menu? Who are mandrake to decide that links to certain companies should be in my browser toolbar.

All of this is fairly redundant anyway - as I'm not really a mnadrake user anymore

I hear ya, and I agree with you. But, the way I understand it, if you do buy the product, then all of those little nasties will dissapear. So they are encouraging you to buy it.

There will always be good, to-the-bone download distros like slackware, etc. Mandrake have a different approach and I support them, to a certain degree. I view these decisions as minor inconveniencies which won't affect me, once I get my box.

I do agree, however, that Mandrake should implement a paid-for download version, for people who prefer aquiring their favourite distro that way.

I think Mandrake can find other ways to increase their revenue, like a certification program, marketing program for resellers, software houses, etc.. They could sell Mandrake goodies, or think about a new packaging (with decent documentation hardcopies), or even charge 5$ more for a powerpack.

I can't stand ads for X, Y or Z while working on product A. It gives a very bad image of free software (just like free beer, freeware).

Let's (gently) flood MandrakeClub site with posts against this crazy idea. I've already posted 2 (french and english). Afterall, if we're at MandrakeUsers.org, it's because we like this distro, no ?

Ok, first I thought..man I don't want to download that again :)....

I unbderstand they have to make money. ok.

So we have:

*screensaver: don't think it's hard to change this..

*installation: doesn'ty bother me at all..

*bookmarks...: just delete the hole stuff before you begin..mostley you have a button for this...

As long as I hav the choice/possibility to disable and change it and it doesn't take too long...It doesn't matter to me...BUT don't start adding spyware r something...then..it's time for me to try to build my own kernel :) or start using debian or something.

Question: Is erveyone sure that the commercial versions will be add-free?

I have to say, although I can quite live with it..it gives me a strange feeling. I somewhat lost A LITLLE BIT OF confidence in the product that they don't add spyware or something to it. I know it normally won't be, but still...adding adds. If theyt add it in commercial products....At least it isnt hardcoded!

If tehre are going to be adds..I hope they wull be off linux producrs :)...(I just almost wrote m$ :D, that's a kind of informing you can say what's ont he market and doesn't make it so bad...)

Once again, mandrake has an opportunity to rise to the occassion by improving their customer service and marketing their product. Instead, they go second rate, forget about their customers, and bloat their product with another annoyance that is intended to---generate capital?? Is that what it does? So selling a product or service, or maintaining good customer relations is just too difficult, but running ads is OK? Well, the porn sights are successful at this kind of marketing, so now we know where mandrake is getting their "marketing" direction!!

Let's see. If you want the good stuff, you must watch the ads and join the sight. Yep, porn!

Exactly Ixthusdan.

M$ are modelling their business model on street pushers wheras Mandrake have chosen a porn model.

What they need to do is solidify a business model and make sure people want to pay for the product.

They need to start support and work on real honest revenue streams. Ive always bought my powerpacks. I rarely use anything on them but I still buy them. Hell my 9.1 extra CD's aren't even in my urpmi sources!

The mandrake club/expert stuff is just one of those pay more and get to see the pictures with the star removed things. get thousands of extra pics, just send your money!
