demonseth17
Hi everyone who reads this...I'm new at this forum and almost new at Mandriva linux, I've been testing it for at least 8 months or 1 year I don't really know...The problems I got are and I hope someone helps me: 1. wireless (I've tried ndiswrapper on mandriva 2008.0 and worked fine at that time) but when I used 2008.1 spring it just didn't let me activate the wireless...now I'm using 2009.0 free DVD i586 and I got (unable to find ndiswrapper interface) I've been reading a lot of post from other forums talking about compiling the necessary drivers and modules from the kernel but thats the problem I'm having what and how to do with the kernel since I don't know where mandriva saves those isos I've got via urpmi --auto-update. [root@localhost Sources]# uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.27.7-desktop-1mnb #1 SMP Thu Dec 11 16:45:35 EST 2008 i686 Genuine Intel® CPU T2080 @ 1.73GHz GNU/Linux (if you need to know what kernel I'm using) and the basic problem is where is the kernel cuz I boot from it in grub.....but how to compile those things ndiswrapper needs cuz I'm having boot speed problems because of that....linux tries to bring up the ndiswrapper interface and configurations but after 10s fail..... 2.rpmdrake crashed while it was been updated and is giving me this message every time I try to install/update/remove programs (except those in source cuz I compile them) what it does on graphical interface.? well it tells me that rpmdrake needs to be updated after I select all packages I try to install...then it downloads the rpmdrake update and when it's verifing signatures it crashes.....and when I use konsole it just do the same then it gives me this message "error: can't create transaction lock on" I've read that it is because the urpmi database is locked by another program (in this case rpmdrake) but when I use "ps -laL, pstree, and top" to find the process I find out that it isn't there opened... 3.gtk...I was going to start learning GTK and the tutorial tells me to install it so I downloaded it (source with the needed library) and compile it, make it, and install it easy with the instruccion they gave but...when I was trying to find the shorcut...it wasn't so I figure to run the program from the installation folder in this case /opt/gtk (that was in the tutoria and I just create the gtk folder in /optl)the program runs (because I have to be su to read, write, execute in root folder cuz I can't even see it) the problem is how can I make a desktop shorcut? I know there's a folder on "/usr/share/applications/kde4/" where are the other shorcuts but how... I thanks 4 your time while reading and while answering to everybody Edited January 14, 2009 by demonseth17

scarecrow
Quite a few wifi interfaces that previously needed ndiswrapper to operate are currently supported natively. But you don't even tell us which one didn't work for you, so we cannot really help. Most of the info you're providing in your post is rather irrelevant. Just set the facts straight, and someone will be able to help you.

ianw1974
You can try removing the package from the command line instead providing of course you know the name of it. Remove the locks again, and then do: urpme packagename where packagename is the name of the package you wish to remove. What you can then do it attempt to update your system, maybe there were some bug fixes for the problem you're experiencing so do: urpmi.update -a urpmi --auto-select and then let it do the update. The first command updates the repos so that you are in sync, and the second will then update all your packages.

ianw1974
From a google, this hints that something is running, like the Software Package Manager gui, or that urpmi or something is launched already a couple of times, or the process is locked open.
Greg2
You can check to see if anything is running and using the lock with ps -e | grep rpm if nothing is using it, you can check to see if you have the rpm5-manbo-setup package installed with rpm -qa | grep -i rpm5-manbo-setup if it's installed, please see this bug report: bug# 46518 for a fix. demonseth17
I didn't have anything running and the command proves it... [root@localhost roger]# ps -e | grep rpm [root@localhost roger]# rpm -qa | grep -i rpm5-manbo-setup rpm5-manbo-setup-1-1mnb2 I don't know what to do cuz I can only install packages using souce but using any rpm file or using urpmi to update packages and to install new from the list (rpmdrake graphical interface)...I can' t .........I still trying to find the problem on internet and as I said before (first or second post) they say there's a process but I don't know where it is....you ian says it too but I'm new at this I don't know what to do :( .....should I use mandriva save mode to type those commands or would be the same???? Greg2
[root@localhost roger]# rpm -qa | grep -i rpm5-manbo-setuprpm5-manbo-setup-1-1mnb2 ......snip...... I still trying to find the problem on internet This is explained in the bug report # 46518 that I've linked in my other post for you. It is a workaround for a bug that has not been fixed yet. I will try to make it easier for you to do. Copy this file %_topdir %(echo $HOME)/rpm %_tmppath %(echo $HOME)/rpm/tmp # If you want your packages to be GPG signed automatically, add these three lines # replacing 'Mandrivalinux' with your GPG name. You may also use rpm --resign # to sign the packages later. # %_signature gpg # %_gpg_name Mandrivalinux # %_gpg_path ~/.gnupg # Add your name and e-mail into the %packager field below. You may also want to # also replace vendor with yourself. %packager John Doe <foo@mail.invalid> %distribution Mandriva Linux %vendor Mandriva # If you want your packages to have your own distsuffix instead of mdv, add it # here like this # %distsuffix foo %_rpmlock_path %{_dbpath}/__db.000 in a text editor like kwrite, and save the file as .rpmmacros in your ~/home directory. Please note the '.' in .rpmmacros, it is needed and will make the file hidden in your ~/home directory. After you have done that, in a terminal (as root) run urpme rpm5-manbo-setup then delete the .rpmmacros file with (as user) rm ~/.rpmmacros now you should be able to install and remove software as normal. Greg2
You have to remove that rpm5-manbo-setup package in order to fix this. I'm not sure how or why it was installed in the first place... that is the bug. OK, I'm going to have you try something else. Copy this # This macro will disable the transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/__db.*. # This lock is of no use to us and will also result in errors when trying to # install src.rpms as regular user. %_rpmlock_path %{_dbpath}/__db.000 into a text editor and save it as 90rpm5.org-manbo.macros file in your ~/home. Then as root do cp 90rpm5.org-manbo.macros /etc/rpm/macros.d/ and overwrite the other file with it. Now try to remove the package with (as root) urpme rpm5-manbo-setup please let us know if you can remove that package. My disclaimer: I've never installed that rpm5-manbo-setup package, nor have I ever tried to remove it this way, so I'm not responsible for any accidents here. :)

Greg2
You can't learn it all from any one book or resource. I've been using Linux as my primary OS for over 7 years now, and used it occasionally for 2 years before that... I still learn something new every day I use it. :) I would suggest for the most complete on-line resource for you to use would be: TLDP For a book you can purchase or read on-line there's 'Linux in a nutshell'. Here's a link for the cli commands from the book and it contains a link to purchase it or read it on-line: Alphabetical Directory of Linux Commands Other 'very' good resources are the: wiki.mandrivausers.org and the: wiki.mandriva.com/Docs And don't forget, we're also here to help! :)

I've had this book, dog eared and bookmarked like crazy, laying open on my computer desk directly between me and the monitor for at least 3 years now. Its a great reference when you need it. I haven't really gotten any smarter when it comes to linux though. My fault I'm sure.
