Problem recognizing Internal IOMEGA ZIP750 Drive

Okay, before people start telling me to read through different forum topics that relate to this very problem let me tell you that I have already read through about 100 different threads on a dozen or so forums and haven't found a suitable solution yet. I need actual help with this issue because it is starting to drive me a bit crazy.

In order to get semantics out of the way, when I say "drive" below I am actually referring to a known partition on a physical disk that has been inserted into the physical ZIP Drive (ie, I know Linux mounts partitions and not physical drives).

Here's the deal...I am simply trying to get an internal ZIP750 drive recognized by Mandriva 2009.0. I have done a sanity check and made sure that other distros can successfully see and utilize the drive (Ubuntu 8.04/8.10 and OpenSuSe 11.0) so I know it is not an issue with the drive and/or motherboard. The second check I performed was to see if Mandriva would recognize the external version of the same drive, and it does, so I know it is not a driver issue (and before anyone says 'why don't you just use the external drive?' my response is simply 'I can't').

Thanks to other topics/forums, I have tried commands such as '/sbin/insmod -p ppa', '/sbin/insmod ide-scsi', etc but all return the same error "insmod: can't read 'ppa/ide-scsi' : No such file or directory" so I'm not sure if the module is not installed nor am I sure whether or not I actually need it. Anyways, I am under the impression after reading several responses that a ZIP drive will generally mount the file system in the fourth partition, which appears to be true as the external drive mounted under /dev/sdb4; however, I have done a 'modprobe ls' and a 'ls -l /dev/' both before and after a disk has been inserted into the physical ZIP Drive (hoping it would be auto-mounted) and there appears to be no change whatsoever. When I perform this same test with the external drive, 'ls -l /dev/' reveals an entry for '/dev/sdb' and '/dev/sdb4' after a disk has been inserted at which point I can successfully access the data on the disk.

I have also done similar comparisons between the /var/logs/syslog and /var/logs/messages and received similar results (no change when a disk is in the internal drive; new messages when a disk is inserted in the external drive). I am basically at my whits end here and would really appreciate someone's input into this issue.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm assuming that you have this attached with an IDE connector. If so, insert a disk and please post the output of

dmesg | grep -E -i 'sdb|scsi' | tail -n 20

and with the disk in, please post the output (as root) of

lsmod | grep -E -i 'ide_scsi|ppa'

Welcome aboard! :)

Both commands below were executed with a disk in the drive and as 'root'

dmesg | grep -E -i 'sdb|scsi' | tail -n 20

Block layer SCSI generic (bsg) driver version 0.4 loaded (major 253)

SCSI subsystem initialized

sr 0:0:1:0 : Attached scsi CS-ROM sr0

lsmod | grep -E -i 'ide_scsi|ppa'

-- Nothing happens, just taken back to prompt --

And yes, this is attached via an IDE Connector.

Thanks!

I've never had one of your zip drives, so I'm just 'trying' to sort this out for the first time myself. :)

I would like you to run this (as user)

lspci -vv > ~/lspci.txt

that will create a lspci.txt file in your ~/home directory. Please attach that to a post as a txt file for us to look at. It may be large, that is why I ask that you attach it.

Don't worry about the code box, I forgot that you must have made 10 (maybe 5?) posts before you can attach something... It's for spam control.

I've done a bit of research for you, and have found that you must determine if your drive is an ATA/IDE or an ATAPI. You can use this page to determine that: zipjaz/atapi

Then you can use this documentation to help set it up: ZIP-Drive

I realize that this documentation is old, but it is all that I can find that my be of help to you. Without having one of these drives to work with, I simply can't offer much more help, I'm sorry. :)

I can only assume that the Ubuntu kernel has some bit of support enabled that the Mandriva kernel does not.

Would you please file a bug report about this? Here: https://qa.mandriva.com/

Because your controller:

02:00.0 IDE interface: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE6121 SATA II Controller (rev b1) (prog-if 8f [Master SecP SecO PriP PriO])

is very similar to another Marvell controller that they are having problems with. Please read: bug #39842

First let me thank you again for your input. The documentation you specified is pretty similar to the kinds of stuff I was finding online. There just doesn't seem to be more up-to-date information on ZIP drives these days. Unfortunately, it is the only technology I am able to use to achieve my goal at this time.

Anyways, the first link is kind of interesting because if I were going by ONLY the information contained on that page, I would say it were a hybrid of the ATA and ATAPI connector because it does have a single button that acts as both the indicator light and eject function BUT it also has a manual eject hook on the front. However, since I have the instruction booklet for the drive sitting in front of me, it clearly states "Zip ATAPI Drive" so my answer would be ATAPI :)

So, after discovering it is an ATAPI drive, I followed your second link and read the section entitled "4.5 ATAPI version". This section states that I just need to enable "ATAPI floppy support in the kernel" but then doesn't give instructions on how to do this. Would you be able to direct me on how to enable ATAPI floppy support in the kernel? The link provided on the page refers to the linux gazette which is clearly outdated.

I will submit a bug report regarding this issue later today.

Thanks, yet again, for all your help.

This is the relevant section of the Mandriva 2009 2.6.27-desktop kernel config file

# Please see Documentation/ide/ide.txt for help/info on IDE drives
#
CONFIG_IDE_TIMINGS=y
CONFIG_IDE_ATAPI=y
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=m
CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECS=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_DELKIN=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD_VERBOSE_ERRORS=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEACPI=y
CONFIG_IDE_TASK_IOCTL=y
CONFIG_IDE_PROC_FS=y

as you can see it has been enabled here:

CONFIG_IDE_ATAPI=y

but, this has not been enabled

# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set

and Mandriva is using

CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY=m

m = module in that line.

So if I haven't lost you yet, you could try loading that module (if it's not already loaded) with (as root)

modprobe ide-floppy

and see if that works.

If that doesn't work for you, then you would 'probably' need to recompile a custom kernel with IDE_SATA enabled

CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA=y

I'm guessing at this because of your Marvell controller, but I'm not positive about it. :unsure:

Just as I was about to throw in the towel and make my recommendation for Ubuntu, I decided to try the command suggested by adamw and it worked!! Immediately after booting up I typed

modprobe pata_marvell

entered a ZIP Disk and it immediately recognized it. Amazing! Now, I added that command to the /etc/modprobe.conf file so I didn't have to probe that module manually each time and it appears to work. Hopefully that is the best place to put it but if its not, please let me know.

Greg and Adam, thank you guys so much for all the assistance you have given me regarding this issue. Greg, even though you and I weren't able to figure out the problem, you have certainly given me plenty of examples on how to debug devices should I run into problems in the future.

Thanks guys!!
