Guest gamcha
I installed Mandriva 2009 onto my home PC (AMD Sempron processor) and generally things appear to have gone well. However I have not been able to configure the wireless, and I am now at my wit's end. I use a Netgear WG111V3 USB wireless adapter, and my ISP is Sky. I have used the Mandriva Control Center to configure the wireless (umpteen times) to no avail. The Sky network SSID is listed in the detected networks but attempts to connect invariably fail (no error message produced). The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 file reads as below: DEVICE=wlan0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes METRIC=35 MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no USERCTL=yes RESOLV_MODS=no WIRELESS_MODE=Managed WIRELESS_ESSID=XXXXXXXX WIRELESS_ENC_KEY=s:ZZZZZZZZ WIRELESS_WPA_DRIVER=wext WIRELESS_WPA_REASSOCIATE=no IPV6INIT=no IPV6TO4INIT=no DHCP_CLIENT=dhclient NEEDHOSTNAME=yes PEERDNS=yes PEERYP=yes PEERNTPD=no The output of the ifconfig command reads as below: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:8F:56:EA:BF UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:23 Base address:0xd400 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:164 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:164 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:12644 (12.3 KiB) TX bytes:12644 (12.3 KiB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1B:2F:C0:29:E5 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-1B-2F-C0-29-E5-00-61-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) The output of the iwconfig command reads as below: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wmaster0 no wireless extensions wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"XXXXXXXX" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 Prior to installing 2009, I had tried out the Mandriva Live Install and the system appeared to configure the wireless with no intervention from my end - no problems at all there, Firefox & Konqueror were both up and running on the net. I am an absolute newbie to Linux, so its entirely possible that I have missed something obvious. I would be really grateful for any ideas / suggestions that might be of help. tyme
I'd say boot up Mandriva Live again, and see what the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 file on there looks like - if you find differences, post them here. (p.s. - welcome to musb :) ) Edited December 1, 2008 by tyme
Guest gamcha
Thanks for the reply. I ran up the Mandriva LiveCD and the wireless worked perfectly again, so I checked out the ifcfg-wlan0 file - the only difference was: USERCTL=no NEEDHOSTNAME=no I went back to Mandriva One and changed the file as above, but this didn't have any effect of the connection - still failed to connect even though the signal strength was excellent. I suspect the problem might be with the Mandriva One setup itself. I am not certain this will work, but I intend to do a LiveCD install onto the hard disk and then install individual packages from the Mandriva One DVD. Will keep you posted about the results. Guest gamcha
I have subsequently re-installed Mandriva Free 2009 from scratch, and am now finding that the wifi is able to connect. Therefore the problem was probably with the installation, it wasn't a hardware / compatibility issue at all. Maybe this post should be removed / moved to another heading. Sorry for the bother.
