Sunwatcher Posted November 21, 2008 Report Share Posted November 21, 2008 I have an old HP Omnibook 510 laptop that has an Actiontec USB wifi adapter installed internally. I am running Mandriva Powerpack 2008.0, which seems to recognize the hardware. If I go to configure network, the card is displayed as "Actiontec Electronics, Inc. USB Wireless Adapter". When I first tried to configure it, Mandriva said it needed the prism2_'something' package, which I installed. Now, however, when I try to configure it, I get an error: "Unable to find network interface for selected device (using prism2_usb driver)." This is where I get stuck. Is there anything I can do now? Also, post the output of the following command: lsusb -vv and: lsmod so that we can see some details on the card, as well as the module that was loaded for it. ianw1974 Posted December 9, 2008 Report Share Posted December 9, 2008 OK, your card has a Prism 2.5 chipset it seems. From a quick google, please try: modprobe hostap and then check with: ifconfig -a to see if the wireless card exists. If you see the interface, then try: iwlist wlan0 scan or replace wlan0 with whatever interface appeared in the ifconfig that is not eth0 or the loopback one. Would you please post the output of dmesg | grep -i prism In the 2008 release the orinoco was selected by default using my old Prism2 pcmcia card. I had to blacklist it and add: alias wlan0 hostap_cs to my modprobe.conf file to use the hostap module. In the 2008.1 and 2009.0 releases, the hostap is selected by default. However this Actiontec device is listed as USB, so I'm not sure what module to load. Maybe it does need the prism2_usb? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So try doing (as root) modprobe -r ath_pci ath_hal then modprobe hostap and modprobe hostap_cs then please post the output of ifconfig -a If this works, we will show you how to make it automatic on your system. Perhaps hostap on it's own, or perhaps there are kernel module packages for prism. If neither hostap or orinoco modprobe, then you'll not get anywhere. You're going to have to remove the madwifi packages to get rid of the atheros module from loading and binding with your wireless although no interface has been loaded, so the module probably isn't in use but removing it will save problems. Try: urpmf --name prism and post the results here. We need to get the kernel module installed so that you can use it. Maybe there is a dkms package for it.
