Whenever I click on "My computer" ("Poste de Travail" in french, hope I translate it correctly), I see five empty usb drives, which correspond in fact to my five usb ports. This is quite annoying. What's the output of (as root) lsusb I'm sorry it has taken you this long to get any help here... I missed this one.
