hawklord
hi, i have upgraded my 2008.1 to 2009.0 via easyurpmi and a terminal, my system is up-to-date, i have used the command 'urpmi --auto-update -v' and there are no more packages, one problem is my compiz and mattise don't work - in fact my system is unusable with either enabled, can anyone help with this problem, i have kept kde3.5, i have a p4 3.4 cpu, 1 gb pc3200 ddr400 ram and radeon 9550 256ddr graphics card - so memory is not a problem, thanks [moved from Software by spinynorman]
scarecrow
Memory isn't an issue at all, but the latest closed source ATi driver unfortunately is... its behaviour is erratic at best. The opensource xorg driver for ATi cards works mighty fine, but... no hardware 3D acceleration, just soft one. The only thing you can do is waiting ATi to issue an acceptable driver. This might take from two days to two years- actually my daughters laptop has an ATi card inside, and after getting completely fed up with their stupid 3D driver I opted for the opensource one. It does not claim much, but it does deliver its promises. Edited November 10, 2008 by scarecrow
hawklord
thanks, i had a slight idea that it may be that, could i use an older driver ?
scarecrow
Yes you can- or you may try catalyst 8.11 RC1 (this is the newest version, numbered as 8.542) from backports. The one on the normal repos is an older beta (8.522).

hawklord
thanks for the help, i worked out that if i run XFdrake as root and change my radeon driver to xorg > ati, log out and log in in drak3d, change my options to compiz, log out and log back in in kde, 3D is now working
scarecrow
It should surely work... BUT: "ati" driver is the opensource implementation for ATi cards, which does support direct rendering, but no 3D rendering. Still, it is (IMHO) the best solution for ATi cards currently, until the closed source driver becomes usable. This may not happen anytime soon, though...
