CD-ROM and hard disk missing?

I ordered a DVD of Mandriva 10.1 from Cheapbytes to install on my Dell Inspirion 1501.

I entered the boot menu and told it to boot from the CD-ROM drive.

It did and then searched for USB devices. (it did find my external usb HD)

Then a window popped up and said "error: cant find cd-rom drive"

I figured it was just missing the driver for the cd-rom (which is weird it worked fine on my desktop)

So I decided that I would just copy the DVD onto my external HD, then I booted from the hard drive and installation continued.

When it asked where I wanted to install the OS the laptop's internal HD did not show up.

All in all Im guessing that I need drivers, but I dont know where I would find them and I dont know how to install.

Is Mandrake just bad with dell laptops?
