Recently, KDE4 crashed on me so I've been setting up GNOME to use in it's absence. (you can view the thread for my KDE4 issue here: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=97989 and here: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=71984)

I'm liking GNOME so far and my conversion to it has been ALMOST seamless. The only things I'm unable to find is the settings for changing the windows themes as well as power options (screen brightness, etc).

Can anyone help me out?

System --> Preferences --> Appearance

to change the themes, etc.

System --> Preferences --> Power Management

for power options (battery). On my laptop I can control the screen brightness using the keys on the laptop fn and the brightness keys.

Unfortunately, these are not listed in my System>Preferences (Appearance nor Power Mgmt.)

I would assume this is because I was using KDE4.1 and then switched to Gnome?

EDIT:

ACTUALLY, I WENT TO THE PACKAGE MANAGER AND INSTALLED THE GNOME CONTROL CENTER AND I NOW HAVE THOSE OPTIONS. THANKS!!

Hey, another issue that I'm having with GNOME. Even though I've changed the theme and the mouse pointer, the changes don't show on the title bar of each window. I've attached a picture below:

help1.jpeg

The mouse pointer will only show it's theme when I'm actually using a specific window (for example, I can see the Oxygen themed mouse when the Firefox window is active). When I'm simply on the desktop, it still shows the original generic Mandriva themed mouse pointer.

Thanks. I've done this (I've actually rebooted the machine) and the issue remains. That also would not explain the reason that title bars on my windows appears to be covered by something.

Thanks for your reply though!

try a different window border theme. there may be a problem with that theme. also, do you have the 3d desktop enabled?

Yes I do. And I've discovered (with the help of the community @ forum.mandriva.com) that the 3d Desktop is what is causing this.

When I disable 3d Desktop, Everything looks fine, but there are two things:

I'd really like it to be enabled because (1) I love the cube effect (I'm a Linux n00b and Windows user for 10+ years), and (2) I use Cairo-dock, and apparently, without Compiz enabled I get an bad effect where when I pull up Cairo-dock it shows a black background instead of just showing whatever is behind it (see pic below)

After running drak3d as root, I still get the same issue :(

The output of 'cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf' is:

cairo-dock needs compiz to do the transparency, so that black bar is to be expected. as far as the source of the bar across your window borders, that sounds like a bug - not a configuration issue. there may not be much you can do except wait for an update

do you know what's drawing the window borders? is it emerald? you should use gnome-window-decorator while in GNOME.
