kind of - it's rubbish - the sound is very juddery and broken. Every other aspect of the game runs nicely though (albeit quietly)

I'd prefer to not use arts if possible

Edit: it must be possible to not use arts - I found the following in the build manual

BUILD_ARTS              Build support for the aRts sound system

                       (src/linux/snd_arts.c) [default = NO]

Hoping I don't have to re-install with different USE flags now... - bet I do :(

I'm not sure what "adsp" is, but I wonder if you change:

~/.quake2/baseq2/config.cfg

set snddevice "/dev/dsp"

Could the sound also be a mixer setting? I know if "PCM" is up to high, mine sounds like garbage.

didn't work - that option was not there - but I added it and I get no sound. I'm pretty sure tha PCM wave volume is set at a decent level - I tend to know about it if it's too loud

I'm going to try and re-emerge with USE="-arts" and see what happens - I'll let you know...
