Use and Abuse of Plasmoids in 2009

I installed Mandy 2009 One over the weekend. Had my share of problems, but most of them were self-inflicted, not so much in the installation, but in the download. (Oh - check the errata page about the missing printer configuration binary, if you haven't seen it already).

So far, I like it, and Dolphin, and KDE 4.0.1 (or whatever it is) has been ok, once you get used to the idea of plasmoids. I think I'll like it, once I get used to it.

But I have not been able to do one thing, so far, that was trivial in KDE 3.5 (and earlier) - that is, put pointer to an app. in the task bar - the quick-start part of the task bar in particular. I think it can be done; the Firefox button is an example.

I'd like to put a link to Thunderbird right next to it, but so far I haven't found the right incantations. Has anyone succeeded in doing that? Please tell us how! Until then, I'll be reading up on Plasmoids!

Thanks.

The problem with putting icons in the tray is that they are so ridiculously large that once you have two or three icons in there you will not have a system tray left. The only real answer is to boycott KDE4 until the developers relearn what is and isn't important in a desktop environment.
