I tried it with the modelines in and out, but to no avail. I still am stuck with 1024x768 stretched over my monitor. Here's a section of my X log:

(--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce 8800 GTS 512 at
(--) NVIDIA(0): PCI:1:0:0:
(--) NVIDIA(0): CRT-1
(--) NVIDIA(0): CRT-1: 400.0 MHz maximum pixel clock
(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: CRT-1
(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1680x1050"; removing.

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "monitor1"
   VendorName "Generic"
   ModelName "Flat Panel 1680x1050"
   HorizSync 31.5-90
   VertRefresh 60
# Option "PreferredMode" "1680x1050"

I think the problem comes from the fact that:

1 - nvidia reports about a CRT (and it seems you have defined you screen as TFT)

2 - you vertical resolution is 60, it should be a range, not a single value.

see for instance:

	HorizSync 30.0-83.0
VertRefresh 56.0-76.0

Try selecting another Screen (you should pick the model with drakx11), and see if it is better.

Do you connect via dsub, or via dvi connector?

Inspired by this question, I tinkered with my cables. I had been connecting with a DSUB cable but to the monitor's and video card's DVI slots via some adapters that came with my video card. I borrowed a proper DVI cable (i.e. DSUB-to-DVI adapters), and voila! Now I have my proper resolution as well as the right edid data.

What a silly thing to be wrong. I don't know why the type of cable or adapter would bork the EDID data, but that seems to be what happened.

Thanks to everyone who put their heads together on this!
