javaguy
I bought an external drive for backups (two of them, actually, keep one in a safe deposit box and swap them once a month). It used to be so simple. It always appeared as device /dev/sdb1 (sda was my SATA drive), it had an fstab entry, and I just said mount /media/usb. Now it is no longer recognized at all by the system. The one thing I can think of that has changed is that I have installed a GeForce 9800 card. When I try to mount, it says no such device /dev/sdb1. fdisk -l shows devices /dev/sda1 (and sda2, etc), /dev/hda1 (and hda2, etc), but absolutely no /dev/sdb1 or any other /dev/sdsomething beyond sda1, which is my SATA drive. ianw1974
Can you post an lsmod so we can see if it looks OK. I'm primarily looking for usb_storage to see if this is loaded.

ianw1974
You don't have usb_storage. I'd suggest modprobing usb_storage and then connecting your disk to see if it mounts this time. Or that at least you can see it. After plugging it in, check dmesg to see if it lists any more info as well as the /dev/sdx1 partition. javaguy
Yeah, I modprobed it. usb_storage now appears in the list of mods, but /dev/sdb (or any /dev/sd* after sda) does not appear in fdisk -l, and it won't mount.
scarecrow
After modprobing usb_storage, restart hal (service hal restart as root). If still you don't see any USB HD's, then something is wrong with your Linux installation, or your HAL policy rules. javaguy
Still no luck. This mystifies me because it worked a couple weeks ago. :(
