x server install on S3 Virge video card

x windows setup

I just installed Mandrake 9.0 as my first foray into Linux. Everything went great (nice install interface), but when I "startx" to look at the desktop environment, it comes up with a mouse pointer with what looks like a barcode trailing alonside it, and hashmarks all over the desktop, along with several vertical lines running down through the desktop from top to bottom. I'm running an ASUS motherboard w/ an S3 Virge/GX video card w/ 4 mB memory on the card. The appropriate server for the card is supposed to be XF86_SVGA, and I installed that. The monitor is a Dell M781s, and I entered all the scan freq.s per handbook. I tried swapping out the monitor for a Samsung and changed the scan settings, but no joy. Thanks in advance for any advice...

I am having a hardtime visualizing your problem. I had no problems getting ML8.2 working with a 2MB S3 Video card. What desktop are you using?

Do you have Launch Feedback enabled for the mouse pointer. If yes, try turning it off.

This advice has been given by a newbie.

I'm trying to run KDE. If I knew how to change to a different default desktop from the command line, I'd try it, but I'm so new I haven't a clue...

How do I turn off Launch Feedback for the mouse pointer? I appreciate any and all suggestions.

This problem is between your video card and the Xfree server. I had the same problem with a S3 Virge card in Mandrake 8 and 8.2.

I had to use Xfree 3.3.6 to correct this --- as the card was not supported in the newer 4.0 versions at the time. I am not sure of the current support or situation in MDK 9 as I have snagged a Nvidia card now.

Xfree 3.3.6 should work just the same as 4.x.x, but without 3d accelleration support needed for the games.

I can go into more detail on the steps I took to get mine fixed - if you would like me too.
