mmmm....crap.... it just crossed my mind that you might (ed?) be using the old couple of files...

Well i can think of this:

try running glxinfo in a console, for what i saw in the frame rates you have (damn, yours is broken and throws twice FPS than mine ;)) the drivers seem to work ok, at least the GL part of it.

Im adding mine so you can compare it may help...

if everything seems to be ok, it may not be the drivers... but some sort of misconfiguration.. no?-

This bastard hanged again while I was writing my answer, so I'll write shorter answers now

Don't mean to state the obvious here, but you did uninstall nvidia drivers before installing the current one, yes?

I didn't uninstall it explicitly, but during the installation a dialogue informed me that the old driver will be uninstalled. Is this OK?

My test output looks generally the same, although there are minor differences. Here it is:

So my computer is a tough nut, is it?

There is some new information about the problem - may be it will give you some hint...

Last night I was using Mandrake for hours, doing all sorts of things, and it didn't hang, so I already thought that the problem dissolved itself. But when I tried to launch some small game from menu, it finally hanged again. As a result, I decided to take a break with Mandrake and installed Red Hat instead.

Then I realized that RH is using that 'nv' driver which doesn't provide the correct work of my video card. This is why those nice screensavers from RH were so slow on my machine. So I figured out I should install nvidia driver into RH. It was a little bit trickier than in Mandrake, but I did it last night. After that those whales in 'atlantis' screensaver began to fly!

But guess what? Red Hat hanged today! And it didn't even react 'skinny elephants' trick.

My next step will be to install Mandrake again and run it with 'vesa' driver for video card. If it will not hang for several days, I'll know at least that the problem is in video driver which somehow doesn't fit my machine.

No need to install again. Just drop to init 3....

Logout to dm

Ctrl>Alt>F2

su to root

service dm stop

remove nvidia with --uninstall

mv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.bak

XFdrake --expert --noauto

Will rerun the X configuration and write a new /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Or just

XFdrake

It's tough if you don't follow some of the suggestions! I never saw a response on a query I posed early on. In the directory /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/*

libglx.so is a sym link to a specific file. I have had trouble in the past with the sym pointing to the wrong file, so I always check it. It should point to the current driver file.

You may have to extract the sources from the install program and compile them yourself for your box. I think the install progrm is doing this, but we discussed it a while back and did not arrive at any definite conclusions.

On another note: ALWAYS rebuild the nvidia's. The only reason not to would be if you didn't have the space for all the devel pkgs that are required, which is not very likely, or common. I've been using -ane with the install script. It has always worked and I've had no probs. It's highly unlikely that the nvidia driver, in and of itself, is your prob. There's many other things to consider and it could be any combo of any/all. Resolution, mouse and related modules, and the DE/wm, just to name a few.

After checking the symlink as lxthusdan suggests, the next thing I'd try is --uninstall and reinstall with -ane.

Hey guys, I understood something from your messages, but not too much. Well, i can locate that libglx.so file, but how do i check its contents? Text editors don't want to open it.

On compiling: I saw the install program was doing this when I installed the driver under RH. It also requested to install kernel source for that. But how to do this in Mandrake is yet a mystery for me. If you could give me some more detailed directions?

In the meanwhile I downloaded and installed some nvidia stuff (2 files) from MandrakeClub, inspired that they were marked by the Mandrake's kernel number. However, it hanged again, and again when I started to type a message here (so I started it over again under Windows). I'd better stay with 'vesa' driver... Until now, there were no hangs with it.

I have a lot of space for any packages - no problem with this.

Well, if there are any other problems, then how can I trace them? By now, I know that even Red Hat hanged after I installed nvidia driver. On the other hand, with vesa driver there were no hangs until now. Although I should spend more time with it.

Don't look inside the libglx.so symlink. Open the file manager, super user mode, navigate to the directory, put your mouse on the symlink and see what it points to. Mine points to libglx.so.1.0 4363, which is the correct version of the nvidia driver. If you have installed other versions, they will also be in the same directory.

Did you mark out one of your glx entries in XF86Config-4? What is the brand of your motherboard, or your computer?

Just read through the whole thread quickly and noticed your prior posts re double loading glx in your XF86Config-4 file. I checked mine and I have this line:

Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"

which I believe you deleted/commented out and kept the Load "glx" line. You might want to try reversing that i.e. comment out the glx line and uncomment the libglx.so line. That's what worked for me. Hope this helps.

Yes, I commented out that line at that time, but this was long ago. Since then I reinstalled everything several times. Last time there was no Load "glx" line, but was that longer line, Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"

I checked that .so file. It points now to the earlier version, because this is what I managed to install from the MandrakeClub mirror. Well, I can download the new driver again and install it again, and then I'll check to where this .so will point.

Just be sure that the driver version you are using points to the same glx library. If you are using 1.0-4363, then you must sym link to the glx lib of the same version, libglx.so.1.0.4363.

What about your mb and/or computer brand?

:shock: Whoa slow down... :wink: How about;

fresh install

at the graphical login do Ctrl>Alt>F2

su to root

service dm stop

urpmi kernel-source

run the NVIDIA installer with -ane saying yes to all prompted options.

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

and change nv to nvidia. When done hit Esc : wq <Enter>

service dm stop

urpmi kernel-source

run the NVIDIA installer with -ane saying yes to all prompted options

These are the lines which I don't understand... Well, I know how to run NVIDIA installer (of course! so many times!), but what's -ane?

In the meantime, what I did today:

fresh install, but the videocard set as 'vesa', to avoid hanging

downloaded 4363 driver from nvidia site and installed (init 3, sh NVIDIA*)

checked the contents of XF86Config-4, everything OK

switched to 'nvidia' driver, cancelling the attempt of the system to install the older version

checked the XF86Config-4 again. I know it almost by heart  (in short: 'nvidia', no 'nv'; no 'Load "glx"' line, but 'Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"' is in place)

checked where libglx.so points, it is libglx.so.1.0.4363 which also presents in the same folder

came here to write a message

hanged in the middle of it

Invoked skinny elephants and came here under Windows :x

service dm stop

SEE: service --help

It's for starting, stopping, and checking the status of services. DM is your display Manager (KDM, GDM, MDKKDM, XDM). You are suppose to install the nvidia drivers while X isn't running. This will stop X so you can install NVIDIA.

service dm start will start the dm.

urpmi kernel-source

the kernel-source and other devel pkgs are needed to build the nvidia-kernel for your machine. This will install those needed pkgs....in theory

-ane

if you append this to the nvidia installer you will rebuild the nvidia kernel for your machine.....so they say. If you append -A to the installer you'll get all options available to you.

example;

sh NVIDIA-blablabla.run -ane

-a =prompt for all

-n =no precompiled

-e =expert

read the readme
