NVIDIA driver

Hi

I'm having the exact same problem. From time to time my machine hungs and the lights on the keyboard are starting to flash. BUT... i've looked through the logs and found that the last message before the system hung was something about DMA timeout. I can only guess that it's something relative to the nvidia driver and IDE irq sharing or something like this.... and also.. i have the DVD/CDROM drive configured as ide-scsi so i can copy cd's with my burner.. but it doesn't work anyway.. so i might try to redo this setting and put it back as regular IDE. I wish someone find the cause of those hungs.... If anyone wants to try to determine the reason of it and wants to see some logs - just reply to this message in the forum and i will provide any log you need.

Thanks in advance.

Well, my situation was somewhat different because my keyboard lights didn't flash. Actually everything looked fine and in the logs immediately before the hang there was nothing which could show a problem - just normal activities, every time something different. So in my case, as I understand, it was just a hang of X which occured suddenly, so that nothing was logged in the system.

However, in your case the problem seems to be deeper and there might be something informative in the logs. Let's hope some of the experts will appear here...

It's me again, testing the new NVIDIA driver. So I am waiting for another hang while typing this.

I installed it in a simplest way, without compilation. If it will hang, I'll try next time with compilation...

Well, while I am typing and waiting, may I ask an off-topic question (on a problem which I had during the driver installation). I wanted to reboot from command line. So I just entered 'reboot'. Some mesasges appeared and then prompt again, followed by newline and some characters like ;RC. And a pause.

Finally I backspaced those symbols, pressed enter and then 'reboot' again, after which the system rebooted, but warned me when loading that it was shut down uncleanly...

So what was ;RC? And what I had to do properly?

Also that missing green dragon in KDE keeps me annoyed

:(. This happens not every time, but most of the times when KDE session is the first (if I run KDE after Gnome this usually doesn't happen).

The problem is that instead of that dialogue with green dragon and with options to restart, logout or switch off, another, small dialogue appeares, named like 'logout "username"' with two buttons only, 'logout' and 'cancel'. Is it a bug to report? Does anybody else have this problem? Can anything be done about it? Because if I follow this small dialogue and log out, there is another silly thing...

But okay, this is enough for a test message. I didn't hang yet, but I'll try... :)

 It happily hanged. When I was running OpenUniverse. Now I can check the logs.

.xsession-errors contains this:

startkde: Starting up...

kbuildsycoca running...

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding

WARNING: KDE detected X Error: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) x09

 Major opcode:  x0e

WARNING: KDE detected X Error: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) x09

 Major opcode:  x0e

As I understand, this is the current session. But how can I check the previous, which hanged?

I'll post it now and then check another log - it may hang every moment...

Just in time! It hanged when I was typing the next message. So I relogged with 'nv' driver now - enough experimenting for today

As for XFree86.0.log - it is huge, almost 500 lines, so I cannot post it here. But I looked through the last half of it and didn't find anything looking like problems or errors.

In the syslog, these are the messages immediately preceeding the first hang:

Jul 29 21:08:07 ikisco xinetd[2671]: warning: can't get client address: Transport endpoint is not connected

Jul 29 21:13:48 ikisco kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:bf:08:95:21:00:08:a3:95:11:13:08:00 SRC=68.74.116.54 DST=10.120.21.8 LEN=48 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x60 TTL=108 ID=53826 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=1461 DPT=17300 WINDOW=16384 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0

Jul 29 21:26:31 ikisco kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:bf:08:95:21:00:08:a3:95:11:13:08:00 SRC=81.196.24.13 DST=10.120.21.8 LEN=60 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x60 TTL=48 ID=51329 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=8 CODE=0 ID=512 SEQ=60827

Jul 29 21:26:38 ikisco kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:bf:08:95:21:00:08:a3:95:11:13:08:00 SRC=81.196.24.13 DST=10.120.21.8 LEN=60 TOS=0x10 PREC=0x60 TTL=48 ID=52791 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=8 CODE=0 ID=512 SEQ=23198

Argh! Do they tell you anything?

And this is before the second hang:

Jul 29 21:32:25 ikisco rcd[2292]: Starting heartbeat

Jul 29 21:43:49 ikisco kernel: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:bf:08:95:21:00:08:a3:95:11:13:08:00 SRC=213.233.108.185 DST=10.120.21.8 LEN=48 TOS=0x08 PREC=0x40 TTL=112 ID=1972 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=2141 DPT=80 WINDOW=8760 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0

Any ideas?
