mindwave Posted August 4, 2008 Share Posted August 4, 2008 I filled the HD on my laptop last night. Then before I sgut down I THOUGHT I had cleared off over 1GB of stuff. So I shut down and upon reboot now, I'm always getting: Checking root file system fsck.ext2: Is a directory while trying to open / :/ The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap of ufs or something else), then the superblocks is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> [failed] ***A error occurred during the filesystem check. ***Dropping you to a shell: the system will reboot ***when you leave the shell Give Root password for maintenence. (or type Control-D to Continue) Nothing I do will allow a clean boot. Now I booted from a USB device and cleared off all the files that had filled it (data files) and now I have 1.7GB free of 12GB. I'm not 100% averse to reinstalling, but if I dont have to, that of course would be better. Nothing I try in e2fsck seems to make a difference. Anyone have any ideas?
