hey,

lets say someone gives you an install disk. They say its this GREAT linux distro, but thats all they know.

you start the install, and you can tell, by your look and feel that its MDV or one of the derrivatives.

uname -r shows 2.6.14-13MDV

so now youre pretty sure its mandriva.

how can you tell what "verion" in other words 2007?2007.1? 2009?

in winodws control panel/system/general will tell you what verion including the service paks.

is there such a linux command?

always curious.

From the command line:

cat /etc/release

That should tell you what version you've got. You will also see what version it is if you choose to do a text mode login rather than via the gui.

I am positive that these are only 2 of the no doubt many ways to tell what release it is, though.
