e-smith sme server trial

Just for anyone interested.

I installed e-smith sme server on an old P100 this weekend.

So far its just acting as a router/web server ...but I have to say its impressive. ITs running on 32MB RAM with a really old 1GB disk.

Config wise it was a breeze.

I installed the software on a PC to old to have bootable Cd support so first i had to make a boot floppy but after that everything was really smooth.

I put in my username/password/DSL providor and had to skip the dynamic dns service because I haven't sorted it out yet.

Plugged on NIC into the switch and the other into by DSL modem and off it went.

Ive seen lots of reviews and they are all eoither very positive or very negative. The negative ones seem to be mainly expectations not being met. It does what it does and thats about it. Don't expect to modify it or use it for a quake server or run OpenOffice, that isn't what its designed to do. But if you just want a simple router with NAT ... hey its up 3 days at the moment and still faultless.

Guest stodge

I've been using SME server for over three years now on an old P350 with 128MB and a 6Gb drive. It is a gateway, firewall, Samba server and a CVS server. I don't think it's falied me yet.

SME Server is simple to install and maintain using the web interface. It's a shame they removed the blades interface for upgrading on the free version though.

Wow You sure got a lot of horsepower there.

Seriously, I wait and see how well it handles some more serious stuff (samba/webserver) but its running really well and does what it says.

The free version is worth every $$$$

What will this do to my mdk web/ftp and when I get off my butt email server? I know it will obviously wipe the destination drive but if I pull the IDE cable of the web/ftp drive will it be able to read the EXT3 data there or will I have to back up and replace the data after installing e-smith?

I poked around on e-smiths site but couldn't find anything on this. Course that usually just means I didn't search properly. :)

Is it beer o'clock yet?

Well, it has the ext3 modules, I just checked. IAlso you can read an ext3 as ext2 ..

It is however very specialised and the files all have to go in the right place.

You could mount the partition under a directory in the same place ...

Another way for the ftp might be to ftp it in form another PC across a LAN ???

You'd learn less but it might be safer. And just tar your web, ftp to the ftp site then ssl it in and drop it into the right folder.

I'm just getting used to the directory tree.

Actually, the webstuff is pretty easy to change becuase you just use an ALAIS in the apache.conf
