Wifi config and driver files

Recommended Posts

Hi guys yet another newbie here

I've just come over to mandriva powerpack 2008 and am finding it hard to setup my wifi connection. I can plug my laptop into my router via an ethernet cable and that allows me to access the net, but when I try to setup a wifi connection it tells me that the bcm43xx (driver) file isn't in the l/ib/firmware folder and suggests that I can find it here - http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/ but it says that the file should be included in the kernel.

Can anyone suggest how I can locate this file?

Cheers

You need the original cd of your w-lan card with the windows drivers.

Go to the MandrivaConfiguration Centre (MCC) choose "network and internet" then "new interface" and then "wireless" follow the instructions, when asked put in the cd-rom and choose the *.inf or *.sys from the xp-folder. Compleet the installation.

From the output you posted, you have a wireless card with a broadcom chipset. I found that mdv2008 was pretty buggy about how it handled these cards. Mandriva 2008 Spring, a/k/a, mdv2008.1, has cured all these broadcom bugs AFAICT. I would recommend that you seriously consider doing a fresh install of mdv2008.1 which can be freely downloaded from here:

I can't begin to tell you how much aggravation I went through trying to get my broadcom wireless card working on mdv2008. There are some very complex timing issues with the way the relevant modules load that you can run into and it can be a real bear to deal with.
