MrMorden
GeForce FX 5900 256MB 15811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3162.200 FPS 15796 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3159.200 FPS 15811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3162.200 FPS Something odd, though...when I run glxinfo it says that direct rendering is off...but isn't the kind of performance I'm getting inconsistent with lacking hardware acceleration? I have the drivers for my video card installed. Is glxinfo returning wrong information or is there something else I have to do to get hardware acceleration? Darkelve
Geforce MX440 64MB ... finally works without crashing with the latest nvidia drivers ( AGpart problem solved). Pretty good performance too, for its price (of course, it's a very old model and POP won't work [on windows] although it has sufficient RAM... :( ). Dakota
Are you all running glxgears Fullscreen or the window that pops up when you run the command?
MrMorden
Now that I've gotten direct rendering working, I'm getting about 8700 FPS at 1280x1024 and at the size that the window pops up, which is almost a 3x gain over my previous values. :o Am I going to see that kind of performance gain throughout, like in Neverwinter Nights or Vegastrike? Darkelve
It's really cool so many people are posting their FPS... because it means their cards are actually working! I'd have to commend nVidia, every new driver they put out seems to improve things for both newer AND older cards. Also, it's nice to see some people got their ATI cards running. Can't wait to blow you guys away with the glxgears :P
SoulSe
I'm quite happy with my FX5700 for now - I play Half Life 2 in Cedega at 1280x1024 with all the settings pretty high and it runs smooth. What game is more demanding than HL2? Doom 3 also runs fine, but is a little jerky if I push the settings up too high. So I can't see any reason for upgrading. I'm sure that'll change in the next few months though.
Jet2k5
Sounds like a good deal. I don't know if Battlefield 2 might run on that video card. I remember someone is #musb saying that it wont run on anything lowe than a FX5900. I'm getting a PCI x16 GeForce 6800. It's going to cost abotu $270.00 US dollars, but it should last me for quite a good time. Now that the 7800 came out the price on the 6800 should drop. Which I think it has i've been seeing a lot of " Mail-in-rebates" on most of those GPU cards. The only thing that worries me is that my mobo will work on Linux ... it's a nForce4 ... Darkelve
For my new PC I'm planning to build/have built, I've been asking some info on this board as well as www.suseforums.net, and the nforce4 chipset for the MOBO seems to be recommended... safest is to check it out anyway, but I suspect you'll be fine with it. Jet2k5
The chipset itself is supported in linux. But some of them have different audio chips along with LAN chips that most of the time are not supported in Linux
WoMBaT
Sounds like a good deal. I don't know if Battlefield 2 might run on that video card. I remember someone is #musb saying that it wont run on anything lowe than a FX5900. I run BF2 on my desktop in windows (yuck) with a 128MB nVidia FX5200 AGP. It runs great with medium settings. Of course that desktop has 3 Gigs of ram :D So that very well may make the difference. I'm looking to upgrade to the FX6600GT 256MB AGP. Anyone have any good experience with either Linux or Windows with that card? (Ultimately I am going to force my sons to use linux if I can sneek it into EVERY machine and not just my laptop ) Edited July 5, 2005 by WoMBaT
