Geforce FX5700 Ultra - 256MB.

I haven't come across any games that don't play nicely - Doom 3, HL2, all fine.

When I do, I'll get a 6800GT.

My opinion: While ATI works in Linux, Nvidia always works better, with less fuss.

geforce 6800 Ultra, what's up wtih gforce4's are they better than my puppy?

GF4 are the older generation.

Of course NVidia really muddle the waters with the GeForce4 naming: a GF4 MX is really a form of GF2 and was a budget card even when it was brand new.

The Ti ("Titanium") series was the top of the line about 2 years ago and still holds its own quite well for most current games, although under Windows it doesn't suport some of the features of DirectX 9 and may not play some of the brand new games that require some of DirectX 9 features like v1.4 pixel shaders. ((Battle Field 2 comes to mind). The "FX" series of NVidia cards was the first to support shaders 1.4

I'm not a gamer but I use a XFX GeF4Ti4200 and play NWN occasionally

My FX5700 Ultra after the latest driver upgrade and running at 1280x1024 with regular glxgears window:

16263 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3252.600 FPS
16270 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3254.000 FPS
16277 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3255.400 FPS
16262 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3252.400 FPS
16263 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3252.600 FPS

Does life get any better? Maybe with a 6800....

20370 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4074.000 FPS
20367 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4073.400 FPS
20368 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4073.600 FPS
20367 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4073.400 FPS

[kristi@c-65-96-162-92 ~]$ glxgears

15846 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3169.200 FPS

18498 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3699.600 FPS

18497 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3699.400 FPS

18429 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3685.800 FPS

18515 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3703.000 FPS

18427 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3685.400 FPS

18508 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3701.600 FPS

18474 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3694.800 FPS

GeF4Ti4200 MDV2005A 7174 driver

But, as mentioned, the FX series will do stuff the Ti's can't, so it's not just a matter of speed.

I resized the window for fun and look!

92325 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18465.000 FPS
95014 frames in 5.0 seconds = 19002.800 FPS
96250 frames in 5.0 seconds = 19250.000 FPS

Seriously though, 1280x1024.

20275 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4055.000 FPS
20266 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4053.200 FPS
20179 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4035.800 FPS
