Often i'll be using my computer and i'll have XMMS open while i'm chatting on GAIM. Gaim uses sound to notify me of a message. But it can't use sound it i'm already using the sound. Is there any way more than 1 app can output sound??

thanks in advance

James

That really depends on what kind of soundcard you are using.. I'm afraid with the state of linux soundcard driver as it is.. there are very few soundcard that does mixing on the hardware. SB Live is one of them, and my old trident built in soundcard is another. My NForce2 soundcard doesn't do hardware mixing as of now, I haven't upgraded my alsa driver to the newest one yet so maybe the newest one support it.

Anyway, there is a way to get around it. Since I use KDE, arts is a way for to do "software mixing". First, I change the output plugin for xmms to arts plugin in the preferences (you may need to download it somewhere, the name of the rpm is xmms-arts). Then I change gaim's sound method from esd to arts. That way, I can both of them can use the sound at the same time.
