Some kernel related questions

1: yes

2: I don't know but there probably is

3: I don't remember if they have been merged into 2.4 yet but the preemption patch and the other one that is like it are both great. (studies show that BOTH is good.)

4: Faster!

1. Is vanilla the original "kernel.org"-kernel?
Yes
2. Is there a page, which gives me an overview of interesting patches for vanilla?
I dk of one.
3. Which patches do you recommend?
None, the mdk kernel is highly optimized with a ton of patches. Using the preempt or low latency isn't going to get you a noticable performance increase, UNLESS, you run a lot of big resource eating apps at the same time and max out your physical RAM. It's my experience anyway.

Looks like patching is not really interesting, isn't it?

Is there a patch i HAVE to build in, if i am using the default vanilla?

This is NO server, NOR big memory, just a (often) manipulated TBird-station.

Thanks for the patch link, i noticed, that they are mostly developper orientated, didn't knew that, thought patches are more basically like adding support for a special hardware.

In real they are just addOns in the development circle of the kernel, towards the next version, am i right?

I had fun with the preempt low latency, and 2.5 kernel.

Probably not.

Looks like it from the link. Usually, hardware support IS the reason for patching, from an end user point of view.
