did you try this?

telnet to it, type in some random charcaters, hit return, see if you get a response? (just a thought)

 

please note this will be different than ftp-ing into it.

Fixed at last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I removed httpd (apache) and re-installed. Also, i reconfigured "pam" and that its, now working OK.

Thanks for all your help and advice, you put me on the right track
