Ixthusdan
Another question: I can't find Macromedia Flash in the portage tree anywhere. Do I install it with tar??
tyme
go download the self extracting file from macromedia and install it with that-that's what i do, works just fine :-)

MottS
Same here. Do a emerge netscape-flash and that's it. If you want Konq to find it, tell it to look in /opt/netscape/plugins .. MOttS
Ixthusdan
Thanks for the tip. I had forgotten about the relationship between flash and netscape and linux, etc. Now, on to my usb issues! Again, thanks to everyone.
Ixthusdan
If I compile a kernel that loads the correct modules for by usb, I lose my nic and X melts!! I recompile the nvidia driver, modprobe, and startx----crashola!!! The keyboard still response, but the system doesn't. When I crash, load the kernel that works, and reboot, I get no indication that it ever crashed! All I am changing in the usb section is making a bunch of mods that I didn't make before. I have no idea why I lose my nic and network. Any clues where I can look to sort it out?
tyme
very odd Ix....hmmm What _exactly_ are you changing in the USB section? Might it cause IRQ conflicts somewhere? Which kernel sources are you using?
Ixthusdan
I'm using what ever sources were available last weekend,rc5, I think. I'm at work right now and can't look. Irq conflict is the best possiblity, if perhaps it is conflicting with the vid card.
tyme
what i meant was: vanilla-sources gentoo-sources mm-sources etc. tho i doubt which one of these you are using would really make a difference. I'd stick with the IRQ issue, that's my best guess :-/
Ixthusdan
gentoo sources. I looked at the mandrake make.config and I decided to try and duplicate the usb section, since my palm works flawlessly in mandrake. But I am getting weirdness. I'm looking at irq's, although I do not know why that would be a problem.
Ixthusdan
Well, it only took me 10 days, but I broke gentoo! I need to reverse an emerge, but can't get into the system. Isn't there a way for me to boot with the cd, mount my partitions, and then use emerge to remove the problem software? Do I mount the / and swap, and then chroot like the install process? Will emerge still know the software installed?
tyme
yea, just boot up with the CD as if you're doing an install, mount your / and swap (and any other necessary partitions) into /mnt/gentoo and then chroot, just like in the install process. after you chroot it'll be as if you're on the system (because, well, you are ), so emerge will work properly. i've done this more times than i can remember :)
Ixthusdan
I thought that would work. I'll be repairing on Thursday, no time right now. Thanks!
paul
well just to add to the confusion: I have never had any luck with gentoo-sources. every time I've install them I've got kernel panics :-( I use vanilla-sources , and patch them myself
