Problem installing bootloader

Hi everybody,

 

first, i must apologise, but i'm a strict absolute beginner in linux world, and my english is'nt better :unsure: .

 

I was pleased to find mcnlive delft, that works perfectly if i boot on cd but i wasn't able to générate a mcnlive usb key. I got this message:

 

"error : problem installing bootloader : /dev/sdb1 : no such file or directory " :mellow:

I've had a look at my usb key (under windows), the files are:

 

boot.cat

initrd.gz

livecd.msg

livecd.sqfs

livecd_F1.msg

livecd_F2.msg

splash.msg

syslinux.cfg

vmlinuz

 

that'all. Why can i not boot with key ?

since you looked at it under windows I'm assuming you had it FORMATTED FAT?

 

Was that FAT 16 or FAT32? I have ehard from some folks that they have found a difference.

 

Most importantly is the partition set as ACTIVE?

 

that was an issue I had in the begining.

 

last but not least when you booted from the CD were you able to SEE the USB stick from the MCNL that was running>?

under windows xp, i can only format my usb key in fat or fat32 mode. i just tried a few minutes ago, and i get this message :

 

error : unable to mount loop filesystem;

command were :

loopsetup /dev/loop0 initrd/cdrom/livecd.sqfs

mount -r -t squashfs /dev/loop0 initrd/loopfs

dropping you to a limited shell

 

and it stop

 

i don't understand, i hav'nt got any bad message during the usbkey creation

 

but i can see the key using mcnlive toronto from cd.

that looks like a slightly different error than before,

 

that one LOOKS like it could still be trying to go to your CDROM.

to give a little more detail, there is a special file system, developed just for "live cd's called "squashFS" its a compressed file syste, and it LOOKS like it is still trying to load it from the CDROM, which leads me to a few ideas.

 

#1 reformat the USB in FAT and make sure the partition is active

#2 check your BIOS and make sure that it's set to BOOT from your USB.

In my LAPTOP, mine shows up under the HARD DRIVE section, in my desktop it shows a seperate listing for USB devices.

#3 do we KNOW for sure that this PC is ABLE to boot from the USB

Maybe you should TRY to boot from the CDROM, I believe that one of the selections on that menu is to THEN boot from USB.

IF that works, at least THEN you know that the USB key is ok.

 

I do remember my original days of working w/ MCNL were harder than I thought they should be, but now it pretty much runs on auto pilot for me.

first, i must give you precision : the key turned with another distro (home made by a friend) on my dell inspiron 6000, but i made the error formating it in order to change the distribution.

 

 

So, i've a look to some posts that said i had to modify the boot with this syntax : livecd irqpoll noapic. I would like to try that, but i don't know where and what modify. Syslinux.cfg ? In wich i have :
