good for nothing

Recommended Posts

Ive been running linux now for serveral years. At one point being a real "fan boy." I was really into it. Sometimes spending hours trying to get something to work. Only cause I didn't really know what I was doing. Things that later on only took like 5 mins after learning.

Right now though I only use it off and on. When I get fed up with Linux I'll just boot into my Vista side for a bit. Then I'll get sick of that and start to miss Linux again and boot into it for a while. Not sure if I will ever bee "Windows" free completely. Mostly cause of games.

In short. If you are new to Linux it can be frustrating, very frustrating to begin with. Since I've been using Linux though it has come a long ways. One thing to look at is maybe a different distro. I know that this is a Mandriva help site and I don't mean to take anything away from Mandy in saying that. Just saying that each distro has it's own little way, or seems to be anyways, on doing things. Maybe a different distro might be the ticket for you.

Normally, I don't respond to this type of thread. However in this case, I was trying to help you with your video driver. You never answered my question in that thread, or told me you were still having problems, and I doubt that you read the info in the link that I suggested would help you.

So in your particular case, you didn't even try to help us to help you. I won't waste any of my time here debating Linux verses windows. So please go enjoy your windows, and maybe we'll see you later.

It s because I switched to open suse so those commands don't work. Ill try to get help about this on suse forums some time if ill still have a will and time to do this :wall:

Relying on programs for security is inherently flawed. Whilst firewall software helps, it's much better to use a hardware firewall - since the programs on your machine can become compromised. Therefore, if you're not using a hardware firewall, your system isn't as safe as you think it might be.

I'm using Cisco By the way do you have any experience with site- to- site VPN?

In the time you're talking now about how bad Linux is and how good windows is, you're problem with Linux could be solved. And were you working with Linux instead of windows.

Yes, as you may have noticed I am a JNCIA (see signature) - Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate in Intrusion Detection and Prevention, as well as an Aventail Certified Professional for SSL-VPN. I forgot to mention I work in networks and security, so I probably have more experience than you do! And yes, I have configured site-to-site VPN many times - it's so simple. I also make my own stateful packet inspection firewalls, as well as anti-virus gateways/mail servers which is harder than site-to-site VPN.

And, if you are such a security expert also, then why you find it so difficult to get your network card working?

Security is complex, yet config of hardware is sooooo easy :lol2:

My network card is working I just don't know how to configure samba server because I don't have any experience with linux. What is not working is stupid graphic card and printer :). Well actually it does because I'm back on vista. And I didn't say anything about being expert I just asked U a question : :lol2: I configured vpn through my firewall but when I connect to it I can see just two or three computers on my network and browse their shares, can ping them all. I don't have a domain controller jet so I was wandering would a simple wins server solve this problem??

I think cisco makes them better. And what do you mean that you make your own firewalls? Didn't you say that hardware firewalls are always better than software ones?

So if you have no experience of Linux, why did you start this thread? Just to complain and moan because it doesn't fit your ideals? Why not ask about how can you do something in samba, or whatever? Would have probably gotten somewhere faster with a much more friendlier approach from everyone around here.

And yeah, I'm sure Cisco do make firewalls better. I'm sure Juniper do also. I don't pretend to be Cisco or Juniper. Funny how you try to be clever when you really not got much of a clue in what is involved in making such things!

I'm done with this thread, so anything you reply with will just go ignored because there's no point in replying to someone who is ignorant. Now, if you want help and assistance, then I'm only happy to help - but if it is all you are here to moan about, then you might as well go some place else.

What makes you think that hardware firewalls are autoconfigured? :lol2:

Also- what makes you think that Cisco will configure its boxes for your needs?

I newer sad they are auto configured, of course that you have to do it your self. But when you get 600 pages of manuals and everything works just about it is described to, its not to hard to configure them. Well I don't know about the others but cisco is really good in that stuff, plus they have a great customer support in case you screw something up :lol2:. I'm not an expert but i found out that i really envoy in configuring routers, firewalls and stuff. Well linux probably aren't so bad also, I guess I just started with them on a wrong foot. I newer should install them on my laptop, because it is supported only by vista drivers. XP drivers came out few days ago, so it was pretty silly of me to expect that linux drivers I found will work just like that. Maybe Ill try wit some older computer for a start and read a couple of pages before that :lol2: For a closure I'm also aware that windows are pile of crap too but It's a pile of crap that I'm used to and in the end I always have my way with them. Just like Sinatra's song I did it my way :D . So I wish you all long and prosper life and no hard feelings.
