ral
I pronounce it Lee-nucks. Most of my friends pronounce it Lie-nucks...and I have seen a few more confusing articles on the subject: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/superge...2189480,00.html http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/saylinux.htm http://humorix.org/articles/jul98/pronounce.shtml After having read the three articles No. 10 on the third articles seems the most correct. ral
I had to add one more: "How to pronounce Linux Pronouncing the word `` Linux'' is one of the great mysteries of the Linux world. Americans pronounce the name Linus with a long i sound, as in pie. However, because Linux was originally based on a small, PC-based implementation of UNIX called ``Minix'' (pronounced with a short i), the actual pronunciation of Linux preserves this characteristic-it's LIH-nucks. Think Finnish."
Ronin
Isn't this sort of a potato/potato, tomato/tomato kind of thing? Yes they like identical but pronounced differently and does it matter? Ok, I admit I'd like to know the "proper" pronunciation myself. :-)
Cannonfodder
It's leh-niks as in Unix

DragonMage
Isn't there supposed to be a wav file or something in which Linus pronounces the word linux the way he usually does. I used to hear that all the time whenever I am using sndconfig. Anyway, Americans butchered the English language so much that they dare to butcher another language :)

mystified
I've heard the .avi and it sounded the way cannonfodder described it. BTW, itti, I grew up in Germany, my mother was from Italy and I traveled all over Europe. I still have problems with American pronunciations. Americans like hard vowel sounds and I tend to make mine soft. I'm always having to ask my husband how to pronounce certain words. I get really frustrated when I go to purchase products with Italian names and Americans correct my pronunciation.
ral
I think cannonfodder got it right: "I Personally say Linux rhyming with the English word cynics." http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/saylinux.htm
Cannonfodder
Interesting... very interesting... I've never heard it.. I was just goofing... how is this possible?
Guest duir66
Yup, linux as in cynics is the way I say it too. If you think this is bad, you've never heard a real American redneck say CD-Rom.... (it comes out "CD-Roam" and I was asked by such a character a few years back "wat dem CD-Roams do?") Just too bad he was related to me by marriage. Regional colloquialism is so much fun. Guest itti
i can´t tell you how to pronounce linux right, i´m not from sweden... here in germany everyone pronounces it as it were a german word, whats probably false. :( i think first you have to now how to say linus. then you have to "mix" it with unix :)
theYinYeti
I prononce it with a short 'i', but the real problem for me is to say how I prononce the 'u'. There's simply no way I can think of, to describe the French 'u' sound in English... Yves.
